Bibliographies Theatrical Costumes (Reference Collection: PN 2067. K 47 1979): This book is an extensive bibliography of titles and resources for researching and creating costuming for the performing arts, particularly historical costuming and accessories. Dictionaries Dictionary of the Theatre: Terms, Concepts, and Analysis (Reference Collection: PN 2035. P 313 1998): This dictionary defines dramaturgical terms, staging terms, critical terms, semiotics and so on. Directories Handel's National Directory for the Performing Arts (Reference Collection: PN 2289. N 38 1988): The first volume of this directory lists contact information for performing arts organizations and venues. Volume two contains contact information for schools in the performing arts. Encyclopedias and Companion Works The Concise Oxford Companion to the Theatre (Reference Collection: PN 2035. C 63 1992): This companion is composed of short articles about performers, playwrights, plays, places and venues, directors, theatrical concepts and so on. This work focuses on Western theater. The Oxford Companion to American Theatre (Reference Collection: PN 2220. B 6 2004): This companion to American theater contains short articles on actors, playwrights, venues, plays, producers, directors, theatrical movements, and more in the United States. The Oxford Encyclopedia of Theatre & Performance (Reference Collection: PN 2035. O 94 2003): This two volume encyclopedia focuses on the non-textual elements of the performing arts, though these issues are discussed. This encyclopedia covers performance and theater from around the world. Handbooks The Back Stage Handbook for Performing Artists (Reference Collection: PN 2055. B 27 1995): This guide contains a series of chapters about topics such as acting schools, voice-acting, one-person shows, how to promote oneself, and more. This book also functions as a directory, listing theaters, audition opportunities, acting schools and so on. |

Performing Arts/Theater/Communication Resources on the Internet: Hosted by the library at Texas A&M University--Commerce, this page has dozens of links to theater and performing arts information. Topics covered include plays, dramaturgy, make-up and costuming, and more. Playdatabase.com: This database, created by actors, can be used to find plays and monologues using multiple criteria such as author, title, number of characters, runtime, genre, time period, and more. While this source does not have full text, it does provide royalty information. Use this source with Inter-Play (above), to find monologues and plays in anthologies. Theater Information Sources: an Alphabetical Listing: Gathered and annotated by staff at Indiana University Bloomington libraries, this site lists hundreds of resources for theater students. Theater Resources: This site lists dozens of links to useful pages on theater and related topics. It was created by staff at the University of Texas at Austin's library.
