The American Dictionary of Criminal Justice (Reference Collection: HV 7411. C 48 2001): The first half of the 2nd edition of this dictionary defines "criminology, criminal justice, corrections, probation/parole, juvenile justice, and policing" terms and concepts. The second half summarizes major United States Supreme Court Cases. A preview of the 3rd edition is available on Google Books. Some pages are omitted from this preview.
Dictionary of Sociology (Reference Collection: HM 425. D 5735 2005): This dictionary defines terms and concepts in sociology and social theory. Also included are short biographical articles on sociologists, philosophers, and social theorists. This book does not have a table of contents and is not indexed.
The Harper-Collins Dictionary of Sociology (Reference Collection: HM 17. J 37 1991): This dictionary contains brief definitions of concepts, theories, and topics of interest in sociology. Also included are brief biographical articles on sociologists and social thinkers. This book is not indexed and does not have a table of contents.
The Social Work Dictionary (Reference Collection: HV 12. B 37 2003): This fifth edition defines more than 9,000 social work terms, "concepts, organizations, historical figures, and values that define the profession."
Encyclopedias
Blackwell Encyclopedia of Sociology (Reference Collection: HM 425. B 53 2007): This 11 volume encyclopedia covers a truly wide range of topics in sociology including gender, the Internet, politics and social issues, social behavior and scripting, law, and more. A cumulative index can be found in the last volume.
Crime and the Justice System in America: an Encyclopedia (Reference Collection: HV 6789. C 6884 1997): This volume contains definitions of criminal justice terminology and information about legal cases, important people, policies, agencies and programs.
Encyclopedia of Criminology (Reference collection: HV 6017. E 5295 2005): Over 525 entries cover the following major areas -- Correlates of Criminal Behavior; Criminal Law; Cross-Cultural and Global Crime and Justice; History of Criminology; History of Legal and Criminal Justice Traditions; The Justice System; Measures of Crime; Professional Issues; Prominent Figures in Criminology and Criminal Justice; Theories of Criminal Behavior; Types of Criminal Behavior; Victimization.
Encyclopedia of Social Problems (Reference Collection: HN 28. E 55 2008): This two volume set includes over 350 entries that fall into 16 topic areas - Aging and the Life Course; Community, Culture, and Change; Crime and Deviance; Economics and Work; Education; Family; Gender Inequality and Sexual Orientation; Health; Housing and Urbanization; Politics, Power, and War; Population and Environment; Poverty and Social Class; Race and Ethnic Relations; Social Movements; Social Theory; Substance Abuse.
Encyclopedia of Social Theory (Reference Collection: HM 425. E 47 2005): This two part encyclopedia contains articles on sociologists and social theorists, as well as articles on sociological theories and ideas. A table of contents can be found in the first part. The second part of this encyclopedia has a cumulative index, as well as a bibliography and chronology of social theory.
Encyclopedia of Social Work (Reference Collection: HV 35. S 6 ED.20 2008): The twentieth edition of this respected title "covers all aspects of social work from practice and interventions, social environments, social conditions and challenges, to social policy and history."
Encyclopedia of Sociology (Reference Collection: HM 425. E 5 2000): This five volume encyclopedia contains extensive articles on concepts, theories, and topics of interest in sociology, including schools of thought. This encyclopedia has a table of contents (volume one) and a cumulative index (volume five).
Social Issues in America: An Encyclopedia (Reference Collection: HN 57.S 624 2007): The full range of social issues are covered in this eight volume encyclopedia. Coverage includes such diverse topics as academic freedom, eating disorders, racial profiling, weapons of mass destruction, and waste. Most entries include a chronology, bibliography, glossary and related primary document.
Handbooks, Thesauri, and Statistics
American Attitudes (Reference Collection: HN 90. P 8 A 527 2005): This source contains polling and opinion data from the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago. The data covers topics such as political and legal issues, religion, social issues, labor, and more. Indexed.
Comprehensive Handbook of Social Work and Social Welfare (Reference Collection: HV 40. C 635 2008): Each volume in this set has a specific focus which is described by a unique subtitle-- v. 1. The Profession of Social Work; v. 2. Human Behavior in the Social Environment; v. 3. Social Work Practice; v. 4. Social Policy and Policy Practice. The information is valuable for "researchers, clinicians, educators, and students."
The Student Sociologist's Handbook (Reference Collection: HM 68. B 37 1986): This research guide is designed to help students and researchers find books and articles in sociology and social topics. It also provides hints and instructions for conducting library research. This work contains a table of contents and an index.
Thesaurus of Sociological Indexing Terms (Reference Collection: HN 17. B 66 1989): This thesaurus lists the terms used by indexers and librarians to describe the subjects of articles and books. Using the terms listed in this thesaurus can help you find more relevant books and articles as you conduct your research. This book also contains a table of contents and guides for use.

Web Sites
Bureau of Justice Statistics: This US Department of Justice Web site has statistics and statistical abstracts crime, criminal offenders, victims of crime, law enforcement, and courts & sentencing.
Bureau of the Census: The Census Bureau Web site offers a huge amount of statistical data about the United States and its citizens. It includes statistics on employment, health, education, and more.
Child Trends DataBank: This resource provides information on "national trends and research on over 100 key indicators of child and youth well-being." The web site has basic and advanced search interfaces. It also provides subgroup, age, and alphabetical browse lists to help find the information you need.
Gallup Poll: The Gallup Poll Web site provides statistical results on the opinions of those polled on a wide range of social and political issues. Use the Topics A-Z list, or the quick search box to find the topics covered.
INFOMINE: INFOMINE is a special database that searches for Web sites and documents that most search engines miss, primarily Web pages and documents on university Web sites. This database is developed and maintained by the Library of the University of California, Riverside.
Sociosite: Created by the Social Science Information System at the University of Amsterdam, this collection of sociology links covers a wide variety of subject areas in sociological research, professional organizations, scholarly journals, newsletters, research centers, sociology department Web sites, and more.
Sourcebook of Criminal Justice: "The Sourcebook of Criminal Justice Statistics brings together data from more than 100 sources about many aspects of criminal justice in the United States. These data are displayed in over 1,000 tables. The site is updated regularly as new statistics become available. The Sourcebook is supported by the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Statistics."
