Reference Books
The following are selected resources in basic or preliminary research in history. For more books on these topics and specific time periods, events, places and people, please use the Library Catalog.
To find books in other libraries, try using WorldCat, a collective catalog for thousands of libraries in the United States, Canada, and around the world. This catalog should not be used as a substitute for this library's catalog, but as another avenue of searching for books.
Atlases
The Library owns a wide range of atlases covering a broad array of subject and geographic areas. Some of the atlases are very general, and others very specific (including atlases of poverty. migration, elections, religion, etc.).
The Complete Atlas of World History (Reference Collection: G1030 .C66 1997): This three-volume set includes text, maps, and illustrations presenting the history of the world from 4,000,000 BC to 1997. v. 1. Prehistory and the ancient world -- v. 2. The medieval and early modern world -- v. 3. The modern world.
The Times Atlas of World History (Reference Collection: G1030 .T34 1993): This atlas contains hundred of maps showing the linguistic, cultural, agricultural, demographic, and political history of the world from the end of the Ice Age to the present. A glossary and an index of place names can be found at the end of the book.
Dictionaries
Dictionary of Historic Documents (Reference Collection: D9 .K63 1991): This dictionary is comprised of short articles on important documents in world history, particularly American and European history. The articles included information on the composition of these documents, their importance to world history, and general facts.
The Hutchinson Dictionary of World History (Reference Collection: D20 .H97 1993): This concise dictionary contains articles on important people, places, events, concepts, and ideas in world history from ancient times to the present.
Encyclopedias
Encyclopedia of Historians and Historical Writing (Reference Collection: D14 .E53 1999): This two-volume encyclopedia consists of articles on important historiographers, along with articles on different schools of thought in history, including social, cultural, political, art, and demographic history, among others, as well as the histories of science, medicine, and technology. A cumulative index can be found in volume two.
Other
Historical Statistics of the United States (Reference Desk: HA202 .H57 2006): This five-volume set contains thousands of charts, graphs, and tables that cover the population (volume one), work and welfare (volume two), economic structure and performance (volume three), economic sectors (volume four), and governance and international relations (volume five). Each volume contains a cumulative index.
Historical Statistics of the United States: Colonial Times to 1970 (Reference Desk: C 3.134/2: H 62/789-970): This two-volume collection of historical United States statistics contains tables on transportation, vital statistics, immigration, agriculture, and more. Includes multiple indexes.
Web Sites
American Memory: Created and maintained by the Library of Congress, this searchable database contains over 9 million digital objects that document the American experience. American Memory provides free and open access to written and spoken words, sound recordings, still and moving images, prints, maps, and sheet music.
Google Directory: History: Created by Google.com, this browsable and searchable directory contains links to thousands of Web sites on a wide variety of topics in world history.
History On-Line: Created and maintained by the Institute of Historical Research in Great Britain, this site is a searchable and browsable index of online history journals, bibliographies, library and archive catalogs, and more.
History Web Resources: Created and maintained by the University of Virginia Library, this site has annotated links to history by region, including Europe, Latin America, Asia, Africa, Latin America, the Middle East, and North America.
INFOMINE: INFOMINE is a special database that searches for Web site and documents that most search engines miss, primarily Web pages and documents on university Web sites. This database is developed and maintained by the Library of the University of California, Riverside.
Internet History Sourcebooks Project: Collected and maintained by Paul Halsall of Fordham University, this site contains articles, help, research guides, and links on a wide variety of topics in world history from the ancient world to the present.
Librarians' Internet Index: Collected and annotated by librarians, this site contains a searchable database of high quality Web sites. To find a Web site, browse the available topics or use the search box.
New York Times: The New York Times Web site hosts a searchable archive of articles from 1851 to the present directly on its front page. While it charges for full text, this tool can be used to quickly find articles in this library's microfilm collection.
Subject Research Guides: American and British History: This indexed and annotated collection of resources includes links to full text primary sources, online articles and more.
Additional Resources
Special Collections: The Eli M. Oboler Library's Special Collections department houses the University Archives, a historic photographs collection, manuscript collections, rare books, and books about the history of Idaho and the Intermountain West. Their Web site also lists links to online history projects here in Idaho, including the Bannock County Images Project, and in other states.
