Reference Books
The following are selected resources for research in geoscience, geology and geographic information science (GIS). For more books on these topics, please use the Library Catalog.
To find books in other libraries, try using WorldCat, a collective catalog for thousands of libraries in the United States, Canada, and around the world. This catalog should not be used as a substitute for this library's catalog, but as another avenue of searching for books.
Encyclopedias
Encyclopedia of Geology (Reference Collection: QE 5. E 516 2005): This five volume encyclopedia contains thousands of articles on topics such as geologic analysis, geologists, earthquakes and volcanology, history of geology, and more. An index can be found in volume five.
Encyclopedia of Minerals (Reference Collection: QE 355. R 6 1990): This encyclopedia consists of entries on hundreds of minerals and includes information on their crystal structure, modes of occurrence, hardness, density, luster, their chemical composition, and more.
Encyclopedia of Paleontology (Reference Collection: QE 703. E 523 1999): This two volume encyclopedia consists of articles on prehistoric fauna and flora, technology, paleontologists, evolution, and more. Index in second volume.
Encyclopedia of Sediments and Sedimentary Rocks (Reference Collection: QE 471.2 E 53 2003): This encyclopedia is comprised of articles on sediments and other deposits, sedimentary rocks, and the behaviors of sedimentation. Indexed.
Encyclopedia of Quaternary Science (Reference Collection: QE741 .E53 2007): "The goal of the editor of this four-volume encyclopedia--to provide authoritative and comprehensive coverage of the subject, to emphasize the interconnectedness of the science, and to make the information of value to all levels--are admirably fulfilled. ...Summing Up: Essential. All levels." --CHOICE "This is a monumental work of paramount importance for modern earth science. ...Probably the most significant single overview of Quaternary science ever. ...The book bears an imprint of unhurried thoroughness in editing...makes reading chapter-by-chapter a pleasure. ...Colour...and resolution of figures...are superb. This book... will undoubtedly be appreciated by the research community and is here to stay as frontrunner for many years to come. Congratulations to...all who decide to put it on their shelves." -- BOREAS - An International Journal of Quaternary Research "There is so much interesting material included that it is difficult to lay the book(s) aside." --Journal of Sedimentary Research -- http://www.elsevier.com/wps/find/bookreview.cws_home/705186/review
Handbooks and Guides
National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Fossils (Reference Collection: QE 718. T 5 1998): This field guide has been divided into two sections. The first section contains illustrations and color photos of fossils and fossil-bearing rock formations. The section section contains more in-depth information on fossils, including age, descriptions, and distribution. Indexed.
Web Sites
Department of Geosciences, Idaho State University: ISU's Department of Geosciences Web site lists a number of useful Web sites about Idaho geology and remote sensing.
Geology Definitions: Part of a larger site about geology and geosciences, this page contains a searchable and browsable dictionary of common terms and materials. Also included on this page are links to more specific dictionaries for volcanology, oil, karsts and caves, glaciers and more.
Digital Atlas of Idaho: The Digital Atlas of Idaho Project (DAI) delivers natural history information to a variety of audiences, including K-12 educators, college students, agency personnel, businesses, non-governmental organizations, and the public at large. It is available online and on compact disc. It contains detailed written descriptions of Idaho's natural history, photographs, maps, sounds, and glossaries.
The Digital Atlas of Idaho project is a comprehensive, GIS-based, interactive Atlas of Idaho, with links to the Idaho Geological Survey (IGS) and Idaho State University (ISU) College of Education Web Sites. The project uses expertise from ISU, Boise State University (BSU), the Idaho Museum of Natural History (IMNH), and the IGS. The project builds on a 1997 joint Technology grant to ISU's and BSU's GIS Teaching and Research Labs, and the Idaho Virtual Campus.
Geology Definitions: Part of a larger site about geology and geosciences, this page contains a searchable and browsable dictionary of common terms and materials. Also included on this page are links to more specific dictionaries for volcanology, oil, karsts and caves, glaciers and more.
Ice Age Floods Institute: Go to the Resources link to find a bibliography of scholarly material. While the site is mostly about Glacial Lake Missoula, Lake Bonneville information is included in the bibliography and in other places.
Idaho Geological Survey: The Survey studies and reports on the general geology, environmental geology and geologic hazards, metallic and nonmetallic deposits, surface and ground water, and energy resources in the state. Staff geologists conduct this applied research with a strong emphasis on producing geologic maps. The information is made publicly available through oral and written communication and in publications.
IRIS Seismic Monitor: Created by the Incorporated Research Institute for Seismology, this monitoring service provides current (up to today) information about earthquakes all over the world, including seismographic data from monitoring stations.
Mineralogy Database: Created by a geologic consultant, this mineralogy database contains information on mineral classification systems, crystallography, chemical compositions, and more. This site can also be used with the Mineral ID Key, which uses mineral properties and dichotomous keys to help identify minerals.
United States Geological Survey: This is the official Web site of the USGS, and can be used to find a wealth of information about geology and the geosciences in the United States.
