The following are selected resources for research on French language, literature, and culture. For more books on these topics, please use the Library Catalog.

Contemporary French Culture

Encyclopedia of Contemporary French Culture (Reference Collection: DC 33.7 E 53 2002): This encyclopedia contains articles on music, film, architecture, literature, language, media, politics, and more as they pertain to France and the French-speaking world.

Dictionaries

Dictionnaire Étymologique de la Langue Française (Reference Collection: PC 2580. D 3): This dictionary defines French words and explains their origins and evolutions in the French language. This title is in French.

The Oxford-Hachette French Dictionary: French-English/English-French (Reference Collection: PC 2640. G 684 2001): This dictionary provides up to date definitions of French words, idioms, and slang.

French Studies

The Essential Glossary of Francophone Studies (Reference Collection: DC 33.7 F 724 2002): This glossary defines and explains a wide variety of terms that are important to studies of the French-speaking work. There is an extensive bibliography at the end of the book to aid further research.

Literature

The Oxford Companion to Literature in French (Reference Collection: PQ 41. N 49 1995): This companion contains short articles on French-language authors from around the world, works from the Middle Ages to the present, and topics and concepts in French literature. There is no index in this volume; articles are arranged alphabetically.

Web Sites

Afrique Francophone: This collection of Francophone Web sites focuses primarily on French-speaking African nations. This site is maintained by the Department of Languages & Literatures at Lehman College, CUNY.

The ARTFL Project: Created and maintained by a number of French and French language research organizations, this Web site serves as a portal to French literature. This site also includes a smaller project to digitize Jacques Diderot's Encyclopédie ou Dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers.

ClicNet: French only. Created by faculty at Swarthmore College, this French language site can be used as a portal into French and Francophone studies.

Librarians' Internet Index: Collected and annotated by librarians, this site contains a searchable database of high quality Web sites. To find a Web site, browse the available topics or use the search box.

Resources for French Studies: Created and maintained by staff at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, this index lists Web sites and other resources for scholarly study of French language, literature, and culture.

Tennessee Bob's Famous French Links: This hugely popular collection of links for French and Francophone studies was created and is maintained by a professor of French at the University of Tennessee-Martin. This site is an excellent place to start for new French language students.
