Dictionaries and Encyclopedias
Archetypes and Motifs in Folklore and Literature (Reference Collection: GR 72.56 A 73 2005): This handbook contains thorough articles on major recurring archetypes (characters) and motifs (objects, events, symbols, etc.) in folklore and literature. Indexed.
The Complete Dictionary of Symbols (Reference Collection: AZ108 .T74 2005): This dictionary contains brief discussions of the use of animals, plants, astronomical objects, religious and mythological figures, and other symbols in art, literature and folklore.
Dictionary of Mythology, Folklore and Symbols (Reference Collection: GR35 .J6 1962): This multi-part dictionary defines characters, animals, objects, and symbols that recur in folklore and mythology.
Motif-Index of Folk-Literature: (Reference Collection: GR67.T52): This six part motif index lists plot events, characters, and symbols that recur in fairy tales and folklore around the world, as well as which fairy tale and folk tale collections they can be found in.
Storytelling Encyclopedia (Reference Collection: GR72 .S76 1997): This encyclopedia contains articles on folklorists, recurring characters, themes and events, and important concepts in folk tale collection and study. Indexed.
Tale Type- and Motif-Indexes (Reference Collection: GR74.6 .A98 1987): This annotated bibliography lists motif-index and similar resources.
Types of the Folktale in the Arab World (Reference Collection: GR268.A73 E42 2004): This motif-index is specific to Arab and Middle Eastern folk tales.
Web Sites
BUBL Information Service--Folklore: Created by the Centre for Digital Library Research at Strathclyde University, this online directory of folklore sites contains a huge number of resources for finding folktales and for analyzing them.
Encyclopedia Mythica: This online encyclopedia covers characters, creatures, myths, legends, and folklore from around the world.
Ethnographic Thesaurus : The Ethnographic Thesaurus is a searchable online vocabulary that can be used to improve access to information about folklore, ethnomusicology, cultural anthropology, and related fields. The American Folklore Society developed the Thesaurus in cooperation with the American Folklife Center of the Library of Congress and supported by a generous grant from the Scholarly Communications Program of the Andrew W. Folklinks: Folk and Fairy-Tale Sites: Created by a professor from the University of Pittsburgh, this Web site lists links to Web resources for folklore students and researchers. Included are links to libraries of e-texts, online encyclopedias, organizations and journals and foreign language sites.
Folktexts: Folklore and Mythology Texts: Created by a professor from the University of Pittsburgh, this Web site functions as both a collection of links to electronic texts and as a rough motif index of common fairy tales and folklore.
University of California at Berkeley Folklore Program: The Folklore Department at UC-Berkeley has gathered these links to resources for folklore students. These resources include online story and tale collections, online folklore journals, professional organization, guides to field research, and more.
