The following are selected resources for research in dance. For more books on this topic, including people, events, minorities, Native American history and so on, please use the Library Catalog.

Dictionaries

Biographical Dictionary of Dance (Reference Collection: GV 1785. A 1 C 58 1982): " Biographical information on over 2900 dance professionals. Aims to be comprehensive, covering ballet, modern, jazz, pop, burlesque, vaudeville, musical theater and film. Contains a selective bibliography. Dance Words (Reference Collection: GV 1585. P 74 1995): This dictionary contains short definitions of dance terms. Terms are organized into chapters, for example movement, timing, technique, companies and audiences, and so on. Indexed.

International Dictionary of Modern Dance (Reference Collection: GV 1585. B 46 1998): This dictionary contains lengthy articles on dancers, choreographers, directors. The articles include essays on the careers of these performers, as well as chronologies and bibliographies. Also included are articles on workshops and dance troupes.

The Oxford Dictionary of Dance: This dictionary is composed of short articles on directors, dancers, dance troupes, dances and performances, and some dance terms. Also available at the library in print (Main Collection: GV 1585. C 78 2004).

Tapworks: A Tap Dictionary and Reference Manual (Main Collection: GV 1749.F 555 2002): Includes a history of tap dance, as well as directions for many steps.

Encyclopedias

International Encyclopedia of Dance (Reference Collection: GV 1585. I 586 1998): All six volumes of this authoritative work are now available to the ISU community online.  There are more than 2,000 articles written by scholars from over 50 countries.  The entries cover all areas of dance including ethnic, traditional and social dance.  There are also entries on topics as diverse as costumes, performances, and biographies.

The Oxford International Encyclopedia of Theatre and Performance: This encyclopedia provides authoritative and up-to-date information about theatre and performance from ancient Greek theatre to the latest developments in London, Paris, New York, and around the globe. In addition to performances in playhouses, it covers dance, opera, radio, film, television, and popular performance, including carnivals, circus, and public executions. Entries range from short definitions of terms to lengthy considerations of genres and movements, such as feminism and psychoanalytic criticism. The Dance Handbook (Reference Collection: GV 1601. R 63 1990): This handbook offers short articles on dance troupes, dancers, choreographers, and so on. This handbook primarily focuses on ballet. Indexed.

Dancers and Choreographers: A Selected Bibliography (Reference Collection: GV 1785. A 1 G 48 1995): This bibliography lists books and articles about major figures in all types of dancing. Indexed.

Film Choreographers and Dance Directors (Main Book Collection: GV 1779. B 55 1997): This encyclopedic book of choreographers and directors in film contains articles that describe their careers and include commentary on those careers. Indexed.


Web Sites

@URL Dance Resources: This Web site functions as an online bibliography of Web sites and online resources for dance. Topics include dance publications, ballet, dance technology, world dance, and more.

Best of the Web: Dance: Find links to dance websites, databases, videos, etc. Learn about all the different types of dances.

Choreography by George Balanchine: A Catalogue of Works: This resource provides a complete premiere-performance record of Balanchine's creative output; it has been created and updated by the Balanchine Foundation and is freely available to everyone.

Dance Help: A compilation of dance articles, dance tips, news, forums, dance listings, and educational information for the aspiring and professional dancer. It is also a free online dance guide to help today's dancer in his/her quest for knowledge.

Dance Resources on the Web: Developed by the library at the Cornish College of the Arts, this site lists dozens of online resources for dance research, careers, associations, electronic journals, discussion groups, and so on.

Jacob's Pillow Dance Interactive: Inside this online exhibit, one may view brief performance excerpts spanning from 1930s dance pioneers to today's most exciting artists, all recorded at Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival.  Dance styles include ballet, modern, contemporary, tap, cultural, and more.

New York Public Library 'Catalog of the Dance Collection' The New York Public library has been collecting items for its dance collection since 1944.  The well known "Dictionary Catalog of the Dance Collection" (REF: GV 1585 .N462) is a book that lists the records in the now online catalog.  It is so well known and used that these books were purchased by libraries up until the advent of the online web catalog.  Now, lucky dance researchers, you can find items in the web version linked above.  Please use interlibrary loan to borrow items that our library does not own. Use the "Collection"  drop-down menu to select "Dance Research Collection."

Sapphire Swan Dance Directory: Includes an extensive directory of internet web sites for all dance styles, such as ballet, clogging, folk, jazz, latin, modern, etc.

UbuWeb: A large educational Internet resource for avant-garde material, including visual, concrete and sound poetry, as well as  film and sound art mp3 archives. Poet Kenneth Goldsmith founded in it 1996.

YouTube: Go to this web site to find short videos of dance performances around the world.
