Reference Books

The following are selected resources in computer science, computer information systems, and technology. For more books on these topics, please use the Library Catalog.

To find books in other libraries, try using WorldCat, a collective catalog for thousands of libraries in the United States, Canada, and around the world. This catalog should not be used as a substitute for this library's catalog, but as another avenue of searching for books.

Dictionaries

Dictionary of Computer Science, Engineering, and Technology (Reference Collection: QA 76.15 D 5258 2001): This dictionary contains succinct definitions of thousands of terms used in computer science and information technology, physical science, and technology.

Dictionary of Computing (Oxford Reference Online): This best selling dictionary is the most up-to-date dictionary of computing available. It provides comprehensive coverage of computer applications in industry, the office, science, education, and the home. It includes full coverage of the Internet, World Wide Web, and multimedia and reflects recent advances in all aspects of computing, especially in personal computing, computer graphics, networking, artificial intelligence, and computer security.

Dictionary of the Internet (Oxford Reference Online): This dictionary provides thousands of terms related to the Web, software technology, jargon, e-commerce, security, and the technical and organizational infrastructure of the Internet. There are also useful links to relevant web sites. Because of the fast-moving nature of the Internet, the entries will be regularly updated and supplemented.

FILExt: A site that lets you search for the name of a program that uses a particular file extension. It also includes an FAQ section that discusses file extensions, including what they are and how some of them work.

FOLDOC: Free On-Line Dictionary of Computing: Hosted by Imperial College's Department of Computing, this online glossary uses (mostly) non-technical language to define hundreds of computing, programming, mathematics, and technological terms.

PC World: This is affiliated with PC World magazine and contains lots of advertisements, but is a great source for information about any popular technology. In addition to desktop computers and laptops, you will find information about cameras, cell phones, PDAs, iPods, monitors, printers, and on and on. The site is not limited to hardware but also includes security product reviews on antivirus software and services to prevent identity theft. And best of all, it is written in terms that the general public can understand.

Tom's Hardware: A Web site that includes detailed information about desktop computer hardware. One can compare prices for most internal components, like motherboards, hard drives, memory, and so on.
