The following are selected resources in computer science, computer information systems, and technology. For more books on these topics, please use the Library Catalog.

Dictionaries
Dictionary of Computer Science, Engineering, and Technology (Reference Collection: QA 76.15 D 5258 2001): This dictionary contains succinct definitions of thousands of terms used in computer science and information technology, physical science, and technology.
Dictionary of Computing (Oxford Reference Online): This best selling dictionary is the most up-to-date dictionary of computing available. It provides comprehensive coverage of computer applications in industry, the office, science, education, and the home. It includes full coverage of the Internet, World Wide Web, and multimedia and reflects recent advances in all aspects of computing, especially in personal computing, computer graphics, networking, artificial intelligence, and computer security.
Dictionary of the Internet (Oxford Reference Online): This dictionary provides thousands of terms related to the Web, software technology, jargon, e-commerce, security, and the technical and organizational infrastructure of the Internet. There are also useful links to relevant web sites. Because of the fast-moving nature of the Internet, the entries will be regularly updated and supplemented.
Encyclopedias
Encyclopedia of Computers and Computer History (Reference Collection: QA 76. 15 E 53 2001): The two volumes of this encyclopedia consist of in-depth articles on topics in computers, computer science, information technology, computer history and culture, and more. Indexed.
McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science & Technology (Reference Collection: Q 121. M 3 2002): This 20 volume encyclopedia contains articles on a wide variety of topics in science and technology, including biology and zoology, aviation, chemistry, physics, climatology, and more. Volume 20 is a complete index for the series.
The Software Encyclopedia 2004 (Reference Collection: QA 76.5 S 628 2007): This two-volume set contains short entries for games, educational software, applications, and more. Software are organized alphabetically by name or by subject. A system compatibility index is also included.
Web Sites
Computer Science: This site contains a collection of links to computer science conference proceedings and journals, sites about computing and computers, research tips and more. Developed by the libraries at the University at Albany State University of New York.
Computer Science Resources: Created by staff at the O'Keefe Library at St. Ambrose University, this Web site is a list of links to pages about artificial intelligence, programming and programming languages, the Internet, computer hardware, and more.
FILExt: A site that lets you search for the name of a program that uses a particular file extension. It also includes an FAQ section that discusses file extensions, including what they are and how some of them work.
FOLDOC: Free On-Line Dictionary of Computing: Hosted by Imperial College's Department of Computing, this online glossary uses (mostly) non-technical language to define hundreds of computing, programming, mathematics, and technological terms.
PC World: This is affiliated with PC World magazine and contains lots of advertisements, but is a great source for information about any popular technology. In addition to desktop computers and laptops, you will find information about cameras, cell phones, PDAs, iPods, monitors, printers, and on and on. The site is not limited to hardware but also includes security product reviews on antivirus software and services to prevent identity theft. And best of all, it is written in terms that the general public can understand.
Tom's Hardware: A Web site that includes detailed information about desktop computer hardware. One can compare prices for most internal components, like motherboards, hard drives, memory, and so on. It also offers a comprehensive comparison of processor speeds, detailed information about peripherals including headphones, 3D displays, speaker systems, and printer and toner cartridge pricing.
Webopedia.com: This online dictionary defines computer and information technology terms. This Web site is updated constantly, and often has definitions for the latest technologies.
