It covers important researchers and theorists, linguistic terms, interpersonal communication terms and concepts, mass media concepts, and more. Not indexed.

Dictionary of Media and Communication Studies (Reference Collection: P 87.5 W 38 2003): This resource defines terms in media and communication on topics such as technology, ethics, broadcasting, interpersonal communication, oral culture and more. Not indexed.

Dictionary of Media Literacy (Reference Collection: P 91.3 S 527 1997): This dictionary includes biographies on media literacy and mass media scholars, short descriptions on media literacy in countries around the world, and—most importantly—articles on critical thinking and communication theories. Indexed.

Encyclopedias

Encyclopedia of Media and Politics (Reference Center: P 95.82 U 6 E 47 2007): This encyclopedia covers the interplay between mass media, journalism, and politics. Its articles cover important journalists and political figures and concepts like media bias, attack journalism, and news analysis. Indexed.

History of the Mass Media in the United States (Reference Center: P 92. U 5 H 55 1998): This encyclopedia contains hundreds of articles on important figures in mass media; concepts such as censorship, copyright, fairness doctrine, niche theory; and analyses of the role of politics in media, the development of different forms of mass media, and more. Indexed.

International Encyclopedia of Communication (Reference Collection: P 87.5 I 58 2008): This 12 volume encyclopedia covers a wide range of communication topics which include the expected and the unexpected. The 29 broad editorial areas covered include social/behavioral change, technology, theory & philosophy, information processing & cognitions, instructional/educational communication, journalism, media economy, media effects, organizational communication, political communication, research methods, rhetorical studies, and visual communication.

International Encyclopedia of Communications (Reference Collection: P 87.5 I 5 1989): This encyclopedia contains articles that define and explore concepts in communications. Terms and concepts include advertising and mass media, writing systems, oral culture and history, music, telecommunications and more. The last volume contains a cumulative index.

Language and Communication: A Cross-Cultural Encyclopedia (Reference Collection: P 29. F 47 1998): This encyclopedia contains articles that define and explore the history of communications concepts. This encyclopedia primarily focuses on linguistics topics such as individual languages, creoles and pidgens, and related cultural topics like xenoglossia and more. Indexed.

The Encyclopedia of Propaganda (Reference Collection: HM 263. E 53 1998): This multi-volume encyclopedia covers the use of propaganda by political and religious groups through history, focusing primarily on the twentieth century. The last volume contains a cumulative index.


Web Sites

Journalism and Mass Communication Resources: Developed by Karla Tonella at the University of Iowa, this site contains links to news and journalism sites, listservs, and more.

Silva Rhetoricae: The Forest of Rhetoric: Created by Brigham Young University, this site is an online dictionary of rhetorical terms, devices, and concepts. Definitions generally included examples and are linked to related terms. NOTE: This site makes heavy use of frames. If your browser does not support frames, you may have trouble accessing this site properly.

Voice of the Shuttle: Media Studies: Developed and maintained by faculty at the University of California, Santa Barbara, the Voice of the Shuttle page for Media Studies contains excellent links to pages on mass media, gender and communication, communication theory and semiotics, film studies, journalism and more.
