Reference Books

The following are selected resources for research in the biological sciences. For more books on these topics, please use the Library Catalog. Health-related reference books are located in the Idaho Health Sciences Library Reference Collection on the 3rd floor.

To find books in other libraries, try using WorldCat, a collective catalog for thousands of libraries in the United States, Canada, and around the world. This catalog should not be used as a substitute for this library's catalog, but as another avenue of searching for books.

Birds of North America (Reference Collection: QL 681. B 625): This multivolume set contains lengthy articles on specific bird species of North America. Birds are organized by taxonomic class. An index of articles can be found at the end of each year's volumes.

Cambridge Illustrated Glossary of Botanical Terms (Reference Collection: QK 10 .H53 2000): A comprehensive, elegantly illustrated glossary that defines over 2,400 terms used to describe vascular plants.

Collins Web-linked Dictionary of Biology (Reference Collection: QH 302.5 .H34 2006): Good basic reference with over 6,500 entries covering all major aspects of biology: anatomy, biochemistry, ecology, evolutionary theory, genetics, genomics, proteomics, molecular biology, physiology, and taxonomy, with links to related to authoritative Web sites.

Encyclopedia of Biodiversity (Reference Collection: QH 541.15 B 56 E 53 2001): This five-volume set is comprised of articles on evolution, ecology, different major animals groups, economics, and more. Volume five contains a cumulative index.

Encyclopedia of Bioethics (Reference Collection: QH 332. E 52 1995): This five-volume encyclopedia contains articles on a wide variety of topics in bioethics, such as religion, human development, anthropology and philosophy, children, research practices, and more. An index can be found in volume five.

Encyclopedia of Microbiology (Reference Collection: QR 9. E 53 2000): This four-volume set is comprised of articles on chemistry and laboratory practices, genetics, bacteriology, virology, and so on. An index can be found in volume four.

Flora of North America: North of Mexico (Reference Collection QK 110 .F55 1993): A systematic and comprehensive description of all the plant species, native or naturalized in North America (north of Mexico); by the time of its projected completion in 2011, it will consist of 30 volumes and will include more than 20,000 species of plants, both vascular plants and bryophytes.

Grzimek's Animal Life Encyclopedia (Reference Collection: QL 7. G 7813 2003): Each volume of this set covers a different group of animals, for example, birds (volumes 8-11), reptiles (volume 7), and insects (volume 3). Each volume contains its own index. NOTE: Volumes from the latest edition are on standing order. Volumes 8 to 11 of the new edition only have arrived.

Handbook of the Birds of the World (Reference Collection: QL 677 .H362 1992) The first work ever to cover in detail and illustrate all the living species of birds on Earth. Series to be completed in 2011 with vol. 16 (we have 11 volumes thus far.)

Biology Links: The Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at Harvard University has collected these resources in biology. They are grouped into general resources, search engines, banks and tables, model organism databases, and so on.

INFOMINE: Biological, Agricultural & Medical Sciences: This search engine scours primarily college and university Web sites for information that can't be found using a standard search engine. Search results include subscription ejournal and ebooks available to University of California affiliates; take the check mark out of "Include UC Subscription eJournals and eBooks" on the results screen to exclude those UC subscription resources.

Molecular Biology Web Resources: The libraries at the University of California Berkeley created this page of links to molecular biology databases. Topics covered include botany, genetics, cell biology, and more.

PrimateLit: "The PrimateLit database provides bibliographic access to the scientific literature on nonhuman primates for the research and educational communities. Coverage of the database spans 1940 to present and includes all publication categories (articles, books, abstracts, technical reports, dissertations, book chapters, etc.) and many subject areas (behavior, colony management, ecology, reproduction, field studies, disease models, veterinary science, psychology, physiology, pharmacology, evolution, taxonomy, developmental and molecular biology, genetics and zoogeography)."-PrimateLit web page

Biodiversity Hotspots: Created by Conservation International, The Center for Applied Biodiversity Science, and the Intel Corporation, this web site provides information about a number of very important, critically threatened ecosystems worldwide (called "hotspots"). Includes basic information, photographs, maps, news, links to other web sites, etc.
