Evaluate, Edit and Proofread

Carefully editing your work can save you time as you work through your research and writing. As you edit:

  • Make sure that you change distinctive words and phrases when you paraphrase. Make sure that you really are rephrasing things in your own words.
  • Make sure that you always cite page numbers and authors whether you quote or paraphrase.
  • Make sure quoted material has quotation marks around it.
  • Make sure sources quoted or paraphrased in your paper are listed in the bibliography and vice versa.

Check your work more than once before you turn it in. For many students, researchers, and writers, writing involves dozens of small edits, rewrites, changes, and rough drafts. Particularly now, when many people use computers to type their work, moving and changing paragraphs and sentences around can lead to unintentional mistakes.

Asking someone else to help you edit and proofread can be a good idea, as many people stop seeing problems the more they proofread their work. Proofreading can also help catch run-on sentences, typos, and other problems. The ISU Writing Center can also help you draft and edit your papers.
