Print | Microfilm | Electronic | How to Search for Newspapers
The Newspaper Collection, 3rd Floor, consists of print and microfilm formats. These two collections are especially strong for papers from Idaho areas. Many newspapers are also available in electronic full-text format by searching in some of the Library databases.
If you need help locating a newspaper, ask a staff member at the Library Copy Center, 3rd floor. They also help with the microfilm readers/printers/scanner in the Microform Room and in making a paper copy of a newspaper article.
These are currently arranged by title and consist of 47 titles (28 from Idaho, 8 from major U.S. cities, 6 from international cities, and others in our region). For more detailed information about the print collection, click here.
The print issues are housed in two locations:
- Current Newspapers (located in the center of the floor) has only the latest issue of each currently received newspaper.
- Older Newspapers are located toward the northeast corner of the floor, near the east restrooms or by the "QE" periodicals. They are kept alphabetically by title, either until their retention period is past or microfilm copies have superseded the print issues.
Idaho State Journal (the local newspaper) current issues are kept at the Circulation Desk, 1st Floor. Older issues are archived on the 3rd floor until the microfilm is received. Ask at the Copy Center Desk, 3rd floor, to see/review any of its older issues not yet on microfilm.
Microfilm
The microfilm newspapers have reels from 29 of the 47 current newspaper titles plus a large selection of older newspaper titles, many with long runs.
These newspapers are housed in microfilm cabinets in the middle of the floor, filed alphabetically by title. The collection consists of many local Idaho newspapers along with some national papers, such as the New York Times (coverage from 1851 to date).
