**The American Jurisprudence and Corpus Juris Secundum provide a historical summarization of American law under broad topics of law. Digests are subject indexes to points of law raised or discussed in reported cases. They provide access through four approaches: topic, name of case, name of defendant or plaintiff, word or phrase. The American Digest System is a master index containing decisions from all written reports of all state and federal courts as reported in national and state reporter systems. The American Law Reports has its own digest system.

8D. State Statutory Law

Statutory laws are those that are passed by a state legislature. The legislature passes statutes, which are later put into a pertinent state code of laws. Statutory law also includes local ordinances, which is a statute passed by a city or county government to guard areas not covered by federal or state laws.

Case law is the published opinions of appellate judges that establish precedent and then build on what has been established to expand, modify, support, or overturn legal opinion.
