FINAL 2009/2010 Journal Cancellations

August 13, 2009

Dear Faculty Member:

In late June 2009 the Library received its budget for FY09/10 and, after making the necessary calculations, determined that the degree of the journals cut was not to be as severe as had originally been anticipated. The cut came to 10% to all subject journals funds, and the list of journals cut is noted in the “10% Across the Board Journals Cut” list below.

Additionally, any print journals noted in the departments’ original 25% cut lists prepared last spring that were electronically duplicated by other library resources were cancelled. The Library has transferred funds freed up by this change to the affected departments’ book budgets. It is important to note that approximately one half of the departments were affected; these journals and the amounts returned to the book budgets are listed in the “Electronic Duplication Journals Cut” link below.

Books budgets experienced no mandatory cuts for this year. Details on book budget adjustments will be sent to your department Liaison and Chair in the coming week.

I should mention that this year’s cut was experienced equally by all departments. The Library continues its work refining its method of fund allocation among the subject areas and plans to test that method during the current fiscal year, with an eye toward implementing it at the beginning of FY10/11. This work is being done in consultation with the University Library Committee and the University Statistician and is likely to result in a relative shifting of support among the subjects. Because this work had not reached a sufficient level of completion by April 2009, when your journals cancellation decisions needed to be made, taking an across the board cut such as the one executed seemed to be a reasonable course of action.

Please note that the journals cancellations will take effect on January 1, 2010, and please feel free to contact me if you have questions about this process. Thank you for your efforts last spring to help make this cancellation effort as informed and reasonable as possible.
