- FT degree seeking students enrolled as of Fall 2009 semester may submit an original essay.
- Submit an original essay on one of these topics:
- Imagine that you are a child in northwestern Pakistan—or in Afghanistan—where the war is being fought. Imagine the war’s ravages around you. What would it mean for you to have access to an education in these circumstances? How would you see your life progressing if not for the opportunity of acquiring an education?
- Stories of do-gooders triumphing against impossible odds are frequently the subject of novels, children stories, and movies. What elements of Mortensen's experiences make this book seem "real" or plausible? Were there sections of the book that struck you as verging on the fantastic? What do you think about those sections? Finally, does the plausibility of an inspirational story have any impact on your willingness to work for change or justice?
- How has reading this book inspired you to bring about community change as an individual? What has it inspired you to do? What sacrifices would you be willing to make to carry your vision through?
