Presenter's Biographical Sketch:
Michael P. Twohig, Ph.D. is an assistant professor at Utah State University. He received his B.A. and M.S. from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, his Ph.D. from the University of Nevada, Reno, and completed his clinical internship in the CBT track at the University of British Columbia. His research spans a variety of areas including the treatment of obsessive compulsive disorder and OC-spectrum disorders, substance use, mechanisms of action, and multicultural issues. He has published over50 scholarly works including two books: An ACT-Enhanced Behavior Therapy approach to the Treatment of Trichotillomania (with Woods) and ACT Verbatim for Depression and Anxiety (with Hayes). His research is funded through multiple sources including the NIMH.
Session Outline:
This session begins with information on the philosophy and theory behind Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Second, the basic research that informs ACT, Relational Frame Theory and related processes will be covered. Third, some of the more pertinent outcome studies and supporting research on ACT will be covered. Fourth, the psychological processes that are targeted in ACT and some specific therapeutic ways to address them will be covered. Training in the use of ACT will occur through video presentations, role plays, and presenter guided exercises.
