Balance Clinic
Educational Goals:
- To provide hands-on learning with direct faculty supervision for physical therapy students in the evaluation, diagnosis, and rehabilitation treatment for dizziness and imbalance disorders.
- To provide hands-on learning with direct faculty supervision for audiology students in the performance of VNG / ENG and posturography testing.
- To foster collaboration and transdisciplinary learning between physical therapists and audiology students.
- To expose students to a unique patient population.
Benefits to Students:
- Students receive hands-on learning with immediate feedback and direct interventions for skills that are needed in a specialized balance and dizziness setting.
- Students are able to interact and directly observe each other's discipline to gain an understanding of the unique contribution of the different professions.
Services offered:
- The Balance clinic offers physical therapy services for individuals that are experiencing dizziness from a vestibular or neurologic origin and/or experiencing imbalance from a multitude of issues such as: aging, orthopedic injury, neurologic injury, general disuse, or vestibular dysfunction.
- The Balance clinic provides state-of-the-art diagnostics with VNG/ENG testing including occularmotor testing and calorics; visual vertical testing; and computerized posturography testing. Physical therapy evaluation consists of general vital signs and response to exertion; general functional testing; aerobic testing; strength and flexibility testing; along with balance testing.
