Planned Giving
- What is planned giving?
- Planned giving describes the process of thoughtfully “planning” and evaluating the many charitable and financial strategies available to help you help the Kasiska College of Health Professions (KCHP) while also advancing your own financial, philanthropic and personal objectives.
- How do I benefit from a planned gift?
- There are many ways planned gifts can benefit you:
- Allows you to make a significant gift to KCHP which reflects your interests
- Lifetime income stream for you, your heirs, or other beneficiaries
- Offers expert management and investment diversification
- Significant cash savings on income and capital gains taxes
- Reduce or eliminate gift and estate taxes
- What can I give?
- People frequently think their only option is to make an outright gift of cash to KCHP. While this is a great way to make a gift, there are a number of other ways for you to donate to charity. A planned gift can be made with almost anything: cash, stocks, bonds, mutual funds, real estate-even property such as artwork and royalties. Planning your gifts is a way for you to take advantage of the tax, financial, and estate planning benefits of philanthropy.
- Can I provide for my heirs and make a gift?
- Yes! In fact, many planning options make it possible for donors to leave more to heirs by minimizing income, capital gain and estate taxes. For example, a Charitable Remainder Trust allows you to sell appreciated assets with capital gain liability. The proceeds are used to provide an income stream for you or heirs, while the remainder is directed to KCHP. Another option, the Charitable Lead Trust, uses assets to provide income for gifts to KCHP during your life or a specified term, and at your passing the asset passes tax free (or reduced) to heirs. In either case, the net amount to heirs is typically increased dramatically, and a gift was also made possible.
- Many variations of these gifts are possible, and may be just right for you.
- How does my family benefit?
- Your family can benefit tremendously from a planned gift. For instance, you may design a gift to pay income for life to you and your spouse. Also, a planned gift can reduce your estate tax liability. The assets that you transfer to Idaho State University remain outside of your taxable estate. By involving your family in your gift, you receive the added benefit of teaching your children and grandchildren about your philanthropic values, and creating a lasting legacy in your name at an institution you love.
- How does KCHP benefit from a planned gift?
- Your gift can make a significant impact on KCHP now and/or in the future, and you can choose to direct your gift to aid a specific area of the College.
- What tax deduction will I receive for my gift?
- It depends on the form your gift takes:
- Outright gifts to KCHP generate a full charitable income-tax deduction, as allowed by law. Outright gifts of appreciated securities are deductible at fair-market value, with no recognition of capital gain—a great tax benefit!
- Gifts of personal property such as art, books and collectibles, are fully deductible as long as they are relevant to our mission. We can advise you on this point. If they are not relevant to our mission, they are deductible at fair market value and are generally liquidated to provide support for the program of your choice.
- Bequests do not generate a lifetime income-tax deduction. They are exempt from estate tax, however.
- Similarly, life insurance distributions to KCHP are not deductible, but are exempt from estate tax.
- A lifetime gift of an insurance policy generates a deduction for the value of the policy. If you give a policy with premiums still owing, you may also deduct annual gifts that offset our premium payments.
- The charitable deduction for a gift that makes payments to you, such as a charitable gift annuity or a charitable remainder trust, is the fair-market value of the gift asset minus the present value of the income interest you retain.
