Major industry includes the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory (INEL), located 60 miles northwest of Pocatello. INEL was built in 1949 for the construction, testing and operating of new types of nuclear reactors and equipment. More than 50 nuclear reactors have been built at the facility. INEL currently employs about 12,000 people.
Other major employers in the Pocatello area include Idaho State University, Union Pacific Railroad, Farm Bureau, AMI Semiconductors, Bannock Regional Medical Center, Pocatello Regional Medical Center, and Public School District #25. One of 18 regional offices for Farmers Insurance Group of Companies is located in Pocatello.
FMC and Simplot, large phosphate mining operations, are located just west of the city.
Agriculture, including farming and processing Idaho's famous potatoes, is an important part of the local economy.

Bannock Regional Medical and Geriatric Center offers the Intermountain Cancer Center, Family Centered Care (Ob/Gyn), a newborn intensive care unit, Womankind, Life Flight (mobile intensive care), a regional pediatric unit, long term care, and a sports/industrial medicine clinic. Bannock Regional is owned by the citizens of Bannock County and is located at 651 Memorial Drive.
