Checklist of Personal Items to Bring with You

Please remember, DO NOT pack into your suitcase money, credit card, or checks; immigration & education documents; and contact information! It can get lost! Pack crucial items and at least one change of clothing in your carry-on luggage!

  • Warmer and lighter clothing you can layer for changing temperatures. See the Weather in Pocatello handout.
If you arrive for the January start date: Warm coat, mittens, warm hat, scarf.
  • A Dictionary from your mother tongue to English
  • Medications you take regularly
  • A medical report translated into English if you have a chronic health condition
  • Good walking shoes, sandals, and, if you start in January, warm boots
  • A typical piece of traditional clothing from your home culture to wear for special occasions
  • A warm blanket, or light sleeping bag, unless you plan on buying it here upon arrival.
The ISU Housing Office provides bed linens and a blanket free of charge for one week to students signing a Housing contract. The Housing Office must be notified in advance if you wish them to provide these items upon arrival.

  • Family, home town , and home country pictures
  • A favorite book in your native language
  • Music from home
  • Recipes of foods you really like but have never cooked yourself before. Practice a little before you leave!
  • A piece of art you really like with which to decorate your room
  • Immigration related documents: passport, I-20, financial documents, copy of birth certificate. Also bring your driver’s license if you have on!
  • Education related documents. Bring course descriptions of courses and syllabi if you need to transfer courses. Letter of admission to Idaho State University
  • List of emergency contacts at home and at ISU
  • ISU Housing apartment or room assignment information at ISU
  • At least $ 200.00 in cash, a credit card if you have one, a cashier’s check made out to Idaho State University in U.S. funds with a bank routing number to cover your first semester tuition and fees and ISU housing expenses, or a sufficient number of travelers checks for the same purpose
  • Bank information for the bank at home from which you will transfer funds to the U.S.
  • Copies of medical and immunization records if available
