ISU researcher being honored as a Health Care Hero

Russell Spearman has been selected as one of the Idaho Business Review's Health Care Heroes honorees for 2009 in the Rehabilitation Care category.

Russell Spearman, M.Ed, Senior Research Associate in the Institute of Rural Health, is one of three recipients of the 2009 Idaho Health Care Heroes Awards in the area of Rehabilitation Care. Now in its fourth year, the Health Care Heroes program recognizes the invaluable contributions made by individuals and organizations in the health care field statewide.

Mr. Spearman is the principal investigator for Idaho's Traumatic Brain Injury Partnership Implementation grant from the Health Resources Services Administration, Maternal and Children's Health Bureau. In addition, he is the principal investigator for the Idaho Person-Centered Hospital Discharge Model (HDM), a research project designed to address specific needs related to discharge planning in rural and underserved areas and increase statewide resources for Person-Centered Hospital Discharge Planning for both consumers and professionals.

As an honoree, Mr. Spearman will receive an award for this achievement, to be given during a dinner event on Thursday, October 1, 2009 at the Boise Centre in downtown Boise. Additionally, honorees which represent Idaho's hospitals, medical clinics, universities, and health care organizations will be profiled in a Health Care Heroes magazine, which will publish in the October 5th issue of the Idaho Business Review.

Ten categories were selected for awards with 3 honorees in each. All honorees will receive awards at the event, but one person in each of the 10 categories will also receive a "Top Honor," which will be announced during the awards event.

Idaho State University and PacificSource Health Plans are co-sponsors of Health Care Heroes. Candidates are nominated by their peers and judged by an independent panel. Other program affiliates include the Idaho Hospital Association, Idaho Medical Association, Idaho Health Care Association, Idaho Alliance of Leaders in Nursing, and the Medical Group Management Association, according to the IBR.
