This presentation outlines the potential contribution and discusses preparedness of primary care practitioners (PCP) in the response and management of major incidents, such as a bioterrorism. The PCP is well placed to deal with the impact of bioterrorism because their community based location and ability to provide immediate and continuing care regardless of age, gender or organ system affected. To be effective, the PCP needs to recognize threats, provide education and treatment for patients and to know what, when and where to report pertinent information to initiate a public health response.
