Research, Ethics and Informed Consent for Referrals
Experts from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) presented a webinar on "Research, Ethics and Informed Consent" on Oct. 31, 2012. The NIMH recruits people with mental illnesses for a wide range of research projects. The role of mental health clinicians in making referrals to research is an important part of the NIMH Outreach Partnership Program.

September 2012Book chapters published on veterans' health
A new comprehensive handbook on veterans' health has been published in four volumes, with two chapters from IRH researchers. The Praeger Handbook of Veterans' Health [4 volumes]: History, Challenges, Issues, and Developments.

Grant to expand mental health services via telehealth
Dr. Neill Piland at the ISU Institute of Rural Health is part of a new grant awarded to The Hospital Cooperative to expand mental health and family support services to children and adolescents using telehealth. Funding is from the HRSA Office for the Advancement of Telehealth (OAT).
August 2012Outstanding Advocate Award
Ann Kirkwood received an Outstanding Advocate Award from the Idaho Federation of Families for Children's Mental Health. The award honors her for "dedicated service and advocacy on behalf of Idaho children and families." Ann is recognized nationally for her research on adolescent mental health issues.
August 2012New funding award for TBI study
ISU-IRH Meridian researcher Russell Spearman has been awarded a $31,000 supplemental grant to study the mortality rates of Idahoans who've suffered traumatic brain injuries in motor vehicle accidents. More details here.
April 2012Shoshone-Bannock Wellness Center moving ahead
The Shoshone-Bannock Tribes Wellness Center and Sports Complex project is moving ahead, thanks in part to a feasibility study completed by IRH researchers.
January 20122009 State Suicide Rankings
The Idaho Council on Suicide Prevention notes that Idaho has the 4th highest suicide rate in the U.S. The 2012 Annual Report of the American Association of Suicidology is based on the recently available final numbers from 2009.
