Position: Interim Athletic Director (ISU Promotional Opportunity)
Department of Intercollegiate Athletics; Non-Classified; Full-time; 12-month appointment. This is a promotional opportunity open to current benefited ISU employees.
Responsibilities
Idaho State University is a member of the NCAA ‘s Big Sky Conference and seeks an Interim Director of Athletics who can offer leadership and accountability in developing and implementing a strategic plan that will provide sustainable financial support, national recognition and student athlete academic success of ISU athletics. The Interim Athletic Director will report directly to the President and will be a member of the President’s cabinet.
A significant attribute of the Interim Director is the ability to raise funds and promote the various athletic programs at ISU. The individual must have the knowledge base in fund raising, budgeting, strategic planning, communications and promotions of athletic programs. The Interim Director of Athletics is responsible for developing a strategic plan supported by goals that will raise revenue. Such a candidate will be adept at maximizing the potential for scheduling and accommodation of sports to create a positive impact on program revenue without compromising program sustainability and success. This familiarity with incentives and incentivizing is important to every sport.
Financial leadership and accountability are important characteristics of the desired Interim Director of Athletics. He or she will be responsible for developing, managing and tracking an annual budget, and will report both plans and progress to appropriate University officials. The successful candidate will have strengths as a business manager and fund-raiser, capable of developing the institution’s sports as sustainable and supported programs within the Big Sky Conference. He or she should be well-versed in advancement practices and be capable of identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding corporate and private donors. As an ambassador of Idaho State University, the Interim Director of Athletics should be articulate and experienced in working with members of the media. The Director will work closely with members of the institution’s executive officers and student body leadership, and should be prepared to interact positively with student athletes, coaches, alumni and the surrounding community.
A candidate should have achieved success in working with corporate sponsors and partnerships and understand what makes an effective and creative promotions program. Expertise in marketing and product promotion, including areas such as apparel and advertising, is necessary. The chosen candidate will take a leadership role in an already-developing capital campaign designed to upgrade existing and create new athletic facilities. ISU’s Interim Director of Athletics should be an experienced athletics administrator at the NCAA Division I-FCS level or larger. A preferred candidate is capable of working with NCAA officials, and able to act as an effective advocate of Big Sky Conference athletics programs, students and directors. He or she will be responsible for monitoring and maintaining NCAA compliance requirements.
The Interim Athletic Director should be prepared to travel extensively and work extended hours, including weekends, as part of his or her responsibilities to participate in athletics events, meetings, and conferences. The Interim Director of Athletics should take a strong interest in student recruitment and success, and should establish goals and initiatives to measure such. The Interim Director should also plan outreach efforts to connect student athletes with the community. A strong stewardship is expected that ensures student athletes maintain good academic standing, graduation and outstanding ethics and behavior.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree with progressively responsible management and leadership experience which includes solid financial/budget administration, commitment to high ethical management principals, marketing and development/fundraising experience. Knowledge of NCAA rules and a commitment to compliance.
Preferred Qualifications
Previous experience in athletic administration at a NCAA Division I University (IA or IAA) level.
