Resident Assistant Job Description
I. Function:
The Resident Assistant (RA) is a full-time enrolled student hired to perform duties as assigned in the Idaho State University Housing department system. The RAs’ main function is to assist residents in the transition from home to college life and to life after college; as well as educate residents in the academic community to communal living, and to maintain order and dignity in the assigned area of responsibility as prescribed by the policies and guidelines of Idaho State University.
II. Qualifications:
This position is open to all Idaho State University Students who:
1. Are in good academic standing with a cumulative grade point average of 2.75 or
greater.
2. Are in good judicial standing with the university and with Housing.
3. Will be registered as a full-time student for the academic year in which you are hired.
4. Will reside on campus for the entire academic year, fall and spring semesters.
5. Have a general knowledge of ISU and it’s policies, regulations, and procedures.
6. Have the ability to relate well in a diverse population of individuals and groups.
7. Manage time effectively and faithfully execute responsibilities.
8. Demonstrate high levels of self-awareness, sensitivity to others, and attention to
detail.
9. Respond reasonable and rationally to emergency situations.
III. Responsibilities:
This position is open to all Idaho State University students who:
1. Are available, responsive, and open to the residents in the area of responsibility, and
within the buildings or complexes themselves, whether on duty or not.
2. Are responsible for and perform educational activities as directed by the Residence
Life curriculum for the assigned areas.
3. Know and assess the needs of each individual in their assigned area and provide the
appropriate assistance necessary for the academic and personal success within the
authorization of Housing.
4. Provide individual and group assistance through informal peer counseling.
5. Know when and how to refer residents to appropriate campus resources.
6. Promote self-responsibility and respect for individual and community rights.
7. Assist residents in accepting responsibility for the control of their behavior (e.g. noise
levels, alcohol consumption, visitors, ect.), which affects the rights of other students’
property, or physical maintenance of the hall or complex.
8. Never ignore or fail to deal with violations of university or housing regulations they
encounter.
9. Conduct oneself as a member of the housing staff and a university official.
10. Conduct floor meetings as necessary. One must be an introductory and another must
be at the end of the year to ensure that the residents are informed of necessary
information.
11. Prepare a plan of objectives, before the opening of each semester, which is congruent
with the curriculum of the University of Housing. The Complex Director and the
Assistant Director of Housing must approve the plan before implementation.
12. Maintain confidentiality with information pertaining to students and their records
while sensitive to information, which necessitates consultation with superiors.
13. Demonstrate leadership in clarifying and applying the objective of residence living.
14. Perform all functions necessary as listed in the RA Agreement and as instructed in the
training sessions, and one-on-one meetings with Complex Directors.
15. Attend all training sessions, staff meetings, and committee meetings as assigned.
16. Report regularly to the Complex Director.
17. Serve periodically as designated “on duty” staff.
18. Participate in systematic evaluation of job performance.
19. Remain on campus when the residence halls are open unless prior approval from the
Complex Director. RA’s may be required to remain over breaks and vacations.
These include Thanksgiving, Semester Break, Spring Break, and other three-day
weekends.
20. Give this position priority over other extra-curricular activities. Prior approval must
be obtained from the Complex Director and the Assistant Director of Housing.
21. A Resident Assistant may not be enrolled in an internship or student teaching while
employed by the University Housing department without prior approval from the
Assistant Director of Housing.
22. A Resident Assistant may not hold another on-or-off campus employment position.
Exceptions to holding another job must be approved by the Assistant Director of
Housing. Anyone participating in sports must also obtain prior approval.
23. All RA staff must sign up for a meal plan of their choosing.
IV. Term of Employment:
Academic Year 2010-2011.
V. Remuneration:
Resident Assistants in all buildings receive a private room and a stipend of $1,410.00 per semester. Returning staff members receive a private room, stipend of $1410.00 plus an additional $100.00 dollars per semester for each additional year of employment.
