About the Profession
Program Description
Name of program: Preprofessional Program in Speech Pathology & Audiology
Program Overview: The Preprofessional Program in Speech Pathology & Audiology provides leveling pre-requisite courses that allow an individual from another discipline to prepare for entry into the Master’s degree in Speech-language Pathology or the Doctoral degree in Audiology. The coursework is compressed into two semesters and one course in summer, and represents those courses required by most universities with programs in Speech Pathology and Audiology. There is currently no degree or certification attached to this sequence. Only Master’s coursework is accredited by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), so this course work is not under the accreditation of that body. This program is also offered online.
Program Highlights
This program provides an opportunity for students to move into an excellent job market with a very rewarding career. Speech-language pathology and Audiology are among the growth jobs of the 21st century. As the ASHA Leader stated: “The need is critical. Nationwide the job market for speech-language pathologists (SLPs) and audiologists (AUDs) remains among the strongest of any of the health professions. A recent publication of the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA) stated that "…Another 9 states – Arizona, California, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Maryland, New Mexico, North Carolina, and Virginia – will have the highest rate of job growth, with a 50% or more increase in jobs in the next decade." (page 13, April 30, 2002 ASHA Leader, emphasis added).”
