Program Description

Name of program: Social Work

Program Overview: Social Work is a helping profession in which social workers seek to bring positive change in areas related to social problems and people in need. Social workers are involved in a broad range of activities at many levels including working with individuals and families, groups, neighborhoods, communities and states. The change process for the profession of social work is established in a broad knowledge base of human behavior, methods of change, sensitivity and skill in working with people from all backgrounds and a value base that is represented through a professional Code of Ethics from the National Association of Social Workers. The ISU Social Work Program is located within the Dept. of Sociology, Social Work and Criminal Justice in the College of Arts and Sciences. It offers a Bachelor of Arts in Social Work (BASW) degree program fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), a national accrediting agency. The Social Work Program prepares qualified students for employment at the beginning level of professional generalist social work practice. The overall objective of the program is to provide students with basic knowledge, skills, values, and methods for entry-level social work practice. Classroom activities are closely augmented by a carefully monitored and supervised social work practicum in a human services agency. The BASW program prepares graduates for entry-level positions, working with persons in both micro and macro practice settings. Central to the program is a commitment to deliver social work services that improve and enhance individual, family, group and community functioning.
