Local clarinetist Shandra Helman is the guest artist for the Idaho State-Civic Symphony spring concert at 7:30 p.m. March 21 in the Stephens Performing Arts Center Jensen Grand Concert Hall.
The program opens with the spirited “Suite No. 2” from Manuel de Falla’s 1919 music for the ballet, “The Three-Cornered Hat.”
Next, the symphony will present Mozart’s “Clarinet Concerto in A Major,” featuring Helman. Her musicianship, paired with the great technical virtuosity demanded in the piece, highlights Mozart’s love of the clarinet.
Dvorak’s “Symphony No. 6,” written in 1880, follows after intermission. One of Dvorák’s first large-scale works to gain the attention of both audiences and critics, it remains popular today.
The audience is invited to a pre-concert chat with Conductor Grant Harville at 6:30 p.m. in the Stephens Center Rotunda, which offers the opportunity to mingle with friends and enjoy the selection of beverages and desserts available for purchase before the concert. Doors to Jensen Hall open at 7 p.m.
D.L. Evans Bank and Allstate Insurance Company are the concert’s co-sponsors.
Tickets are $32 per adult, $17 for students through high school, and $12 for limited third-tier balcony tickets. Rush tickets at $17 are available on concert night after 7 p.m. ISU students with valid Bengal ID admitted free (up to 150).
