ISU Oboler Library to hold Biennial Book Sale April 16-17

The Idaho State University Eli M. Oboler Library will hold its biennial Book Sale on Friday and Saturday, April 16-17.

The Library has been collecting books for two years to include in this two-day-only sale.

The event will take place in the student lounge at the Library, located at 850 S. Ninth in Pocatello, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, April 16, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. (more…)

Mapping software developed by Idaho State University, USU is international hit

Geographic Information System (GIS) software MapWindow GIS developed by faculty and graduate students in the Idaho State University geosciences department and from Utah State University is proving to be an international hit:  it has been downloaded more than 260,000 times from users throughout the world and has 9,000 registered users.

This free, open-source software is so popular that the ISU geosciences department will host the 1st International MapWindow GIS Users and Developers Conference March 31-April 2 at Disney World in Orlando, Fla. At least 60 users and developers from around the world are expected to attend the conference. Attendees include representatives from the Environmental Protection Agency, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and several private companies and universities.  (more…)

Science Trek 2010 for third through fifth graders set April 16 at IMNH

Idaho State University and the Idaho Museum of Natural History will present a night of scientific exploration with Science Trek 2010 on Friday, April 16, at the Museum.

Co-sponsors of the event include Idaho Public Television and the Idaho Museum of Natural History.

The overnight, stay-at-the-museum experience will allow children in third through the fifth grades to learn about the frontiers of ancient and modern sciences. (more…)

ISU Bengal Dancers to present Spring Dance Showcase on April 2-3 at Frazier Auditorium

The Idaho State University Bengal Dancers will host a Spring Dance Showcase at 7 p.m. Friday, April 2, and Saturday, April 3, in the Diane and Chick Bilyeu Theatre in Frazier Hall.

Electro-magnetism is the topic of ISU Saturday Science on April 10

The Idaho State University Department of Physics and the Idaho Museum of Natural History will host a Saturday Science presentation from 1 to 2:30 p.m. April 10.

The presentation is designed for children in the third through the fifth grades. The interactive presentation will explore the use of magnets, electro-magnetism and their relationships with electricity in everyday life. There will also be demonstrations on the laws of motion. The event will be held in the Idaho Museum of Natural History. (more…)

Idaho Falls principal Jeanne Johnson named 2010 Outstanding Educator by ISU College of Education

The Idaho State University College of Education has named Idaho Falls elementary school principal Jeanne Johnson as the 2010 Outstanding Educator of the Year.

She will be honored Friday, March 12, at the 53rd annual ISU Kappa Delta Pi Teacher Appreciation and Outstanding Educator of the Year Banquet at the Holiday Inn in Pocatello.

Johnson, an Idaho Falls native and an alumnus of ISU, is the principal at A.H. Bush Elementary School in Idaho Falls School District #91. (more…)

ISU physics department to host Science Olympiad on March 13

The Idaho State University Department of Physics will host a regional Science Olympiad on the ISU campus on Saturday, March 13.

Seventh through ninth grade students from throughout Southeast Idaho will represent their schools and communities and compete in teams in a variety of science competitions.

Schools with winning teams will receive cash awards totaling $500 to support science education courtesy of the J.R. Simplot Company. Winning teams will be encouraged to compete in the state competition in Nampa on April 10.  The Idaho champion team will be invited to compete in the National Science Olympiad at Indiana University in May. ‘Mormon Families since World War II’ topic of lecture by Jan Shipps March 31 at ISU

The Idaho State University Women's Studies Program will present the lecture "Mormon Families Since World War II" by noted Mormon scholar Jan Shipps at 7:30 p.m. March 31 in Goranson Hall in the ISU Fine Arts Building.

Shipps, an award-winning professor emeritus of history and religious studies in the Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) School of Liberal Arts, is a popular lecturer as well as seminar leader. Journalists from both the print and electronic media regularly seek out her observations about Mormonism.   (more…)

Mini golf at Idaho State University Oboler Library set April 10; sponsorships available

Students, faculty and staff at Idaho State University and friends of the institution will have the opportunity to raise money for a worthy institution, the Eli M. Oboler Library, and to mini golf in a unique setting on Saturday, April 10.

The Mini Golf at Oboler Library will offer golfers the opportunity to putt their way around the library's book collections and displays, which are throughout the structure's three floors. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The 18-hole course will feature holes created and decorated by ISU student groups, as well as by local businesses. (more…)
