‘American Health Care: Facing the Challenges’ theme of Idaho Conference on Health Care

The 21st Annual Idaho Conference on Health Care will be held at Idaho State University from Wednesday, Oct. 22, through Friday, Oct. 24, at the Pond Student Union Building. This year’s theme is “American Health Care: Facing the Challenges.”

The conference will feature a diverse group of guest speakers presenting on crucial issues facing health care providers and patients today.

Topics range from the effects, treatment and prevention of methamphetamine use to weight loss, nutrition, brain fitness for healthy aging and pain management. A special guest, Michael Dansinger, M.D., will give the keynote address “Beating Obesity: Mission Impossible?” at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, in the Pond Student Union Ballroom. (more…)

Nominations now open for ‘Idaho Business Leader of the Year’

Nominations are now open for “Idaho Business Leader of the Year.” The award, made annually since 1959, is presented by the Delta Upsilon Chapter of Alpha Kappa Psi at Idaho State University. Alpha Kappa Psi is recognized as the premier developer of business leaders and is the oldest professional business fraternity in the nation. (more…)

ISU’s Hansen named ‘Environmentalist of the Year for Latin America’

“Latin Trade,” a leading international business magazine focusing on Latin America and the Caribbean, has named Idaho State University’s Richard Hansen, Ph.D., “Environmentalist of the Year for Latin America.”

Hansen is the director of the Mirador Basin Project in Guatemala and is the chief senior scientist for the Idaho State University Institute of Mesoamerican Research, in the anthropology department. (more…)

Institute of Rural Health lands $800,000 grant to help chronically ill patients find after-care

What happens to Idaho’s Medicaid and Medicare patients once they leave the hospital?Are nursing homes and assisted-living centers the only options for people living with a chronic illness or a physical disability?           

Those questions are about to be explored by Idaho State University-Boise senior research associate Russell Spearman who was recently awarded an $800,000 grant from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services or CMS. The project begins Sept. 30 and will run for three years. The Institute of Rural Health's Debra Larsen, Ph.D., will serve as co-principal investigator.

Rangeland remote sensing expert to give seminar, be honored at ISU

ISU part of collaborative effort to establish new Idaho mountain quail population

Idaho researchers are helping to try to re-establish a mountain quail population in southern Idaho “that is clinging by its toenails” to survive.

Mountain Quail once thrived in Idaho, but are now nearly extinct in the Gem State. There is a small population reported in the Riggins area as well as sporadic reports of a few sightings of the bird in other parts of the state.

And now, due to a collaborative effort, there is a small population of the birds in the Bennett Hills area north of Mountain Home. (more…)
