Admission Requirements - Transcripts/GPA
What are the transcript admission requirements?
Applicants applying as degree-seeking students must request that each institution from which they have taken any post-secondary work submit one official transcript (i.e., in a university sealed envelope) directly to the Graduate School. Idaho State University undergraduate transcripts are available to the Graduate School and need not be forwarded by the applicant. Non-degree seeking applicants must provide a transcript showing proof of degree. How is my admissions GPA Calculated?
GPA is calculated based on the last 60 credits (90 quarter credit hours), using complete semesters of undergraduate course work.
What if the Idaho State University undergraduate admissions office already has my transcripts, (i.e., I am/was an Idaho State University undergraduate student) do I need to mail another copy to the Graduate School?
No. Idaho State University undergraduate transcripts are available to the Graduate School and need not be forwarded by the applicant.

What is the GRE/MAT/GMAT requirement for Graduate School admission?
Idaho State University uses a sliding GPA/Test Score scale:
3.5+ No GRE required
3.0-3.499 40%tile in at least one area GRE (40%tile MAT)
2.5-2.999 combined (V/Q) minimum score 1000 (45%tile MAT)
NOTE: Some departments and EdS, and doctoral admission, have higher standards. Generally, students applying for admission to a doctoral program must hold a master's degree and must have achieved at least the 50th percentile in one of the aptitude sections (V/Q/A) of the GRE.
If I already have a Master's degree, do I have to take the GRE/MAT/GMAT?
Generally yes, but...Idaho State University uses a sliding GPA/Test Score scale (GPA is based on the last 60 credits of undergraduate course work):
3.5+ No GRE required
3.0-3.499 40%tile at least one area GRE (40%tile MAT)
2.5-2.999 combined (V/Q) minimum score 1000 (45%tile MAT)
NOTE: Some departments AND doctoral admission, have higher standards. Generally, students applying for admission to a doctoral program must hold a master's degree and must have achieved at least the 50th percentile in one of the aptitude sections (V/Q/A) of the GRE. The GRE/MAT/GMAT scores are also used for other graduate purposes (e.g., NRTW awards, etc.).

Can I send a photocopy of my GRE/MAT/GMAT scores to the Graduate School?
Yes. However, photocopies are not considered official documents, and may be declined for admission consideration by the Graduate School and/or department.
I do not like the score I got on the GRE/MAT/GMAT. Can I take it again?
Yes.

What does the Graduate School require for admission?

The applicant must clearly indicate the graduate program desired on the application form, or if non-degree-seeking, the college and department the student intends to take courses from. GRE/GMAT/MAT scores must be submitted for degree-seeking applicants, as per the sliding GPA/Test Score admissions scale:

What are the different ways that I can apply to Graduate School?
Applications for admission may be obtained online or from the Graduate School. An application form is included within the Graduate Catalog.
Is there an application fee for admission?
Applicants must include a $55 non-refundable application fee with each application form. Students who do not pay the required application fee will not be processed for admission.
Can my application fee be waived or delayed?
No.
How do I pay my application fee?
The application fee may be paid by check: Payable to Idaho State University and submitted with the application, or by credit card. To pay by credit card, call the University Cashier's Office at: 208-282-2900.
If I have withdrawn, declined, or been denied admission to the Graduate School, do I need to reapply?
Yes.
Once the application paperwork is processed in the Graduate School, how long does it take the department to make a recommendation for admission?
It varies somewhat by department and time of year. Typically 2-4 weeks.

Are there additional (other) specific program admission requirements?
Some programs require additional information (e.g., letters of recommendation); please contact the department and review individual departmental sections of the Graduate Catalog for additional requirements.
What are the application deadlines for the Graduate School?
Application forms must be completed and returned to the Graduate School no later than May 1st for summer semester enrollment, July 1st for fall semester enrollment, and December 1st for spring semester enrollment, or the following Monday should these dates fall on a weekend.

How will I be notified when I am accepted/denied?
Applicants who have been accepted into Graduate School will receive a notification letter (and a copy of the Approval for Admission form) from the Graduate School. Those who have not been admitted will receive a letter from the Graduate School.
How long is admission to the Graduate School valid?
Graduate students who have been admitted to Graduate School may enroll for graduate or undergraduate classes by preregistration or registration without further application activity if they enroll within 2 years from the beginning of the term for which they were accepted.
How long can a student be inactive before they must re-apply?
Students who were previously admitted to Graduate School are required to reapply and pay the application fee if they fail to enroll for over 2 years.
What are the different Graduate School admission classifications?
Classified, Classified (with Performance Requirements) and Unclassified (Non-degree seeking).
If I am non-degree seeking, what are the admission requirements?
Unclassified (Non-degree seeking) students must have a baccalaureate degree from a college or university regionally accredited in the United States or its equivalent from a school in another country. Proof of graduation must be shown by evidence of a degree listed on a transcript. Students must submit a copy of an unofficial transcript showing the awarding of the degree and date. A properly completed application form that includes signing an agreement that the applicant will provide evidence that he/she holds a baccalaureate degree must also be submitted. International students do not qualify for Unclassified status.
What must I do to take Professional Development courses?
Students may enroll in professional development courses offered under the 598P number without the necessity of being admitted to Graduate School. However, they must hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution at the time they enter the class or receive special permission from the Dean of the Graduate School if they are last semester seniors. Please see the Graduate Catalog for additional information on 597 and 598P courses.
If I am an undergraduate, can I take graduate level courses?
Seniors in residence at Idaho State University, with permission of the Graduate School, may register for up to 6 graduate credits during the semester or summer session in which they will complete the bachelor’s degree at Idaho State University.
Are there additional requirements for international students?
Yes: (1) International students must submit a financial statement to the Graduate School verifying that they will be able to support themselves financially for one year while attending Idaho State University. This document must consist of a statement or letter from a bank indicating that funds are available and accessible. The amount of money available to the student must be listed on the financial statement. A graduate assistantship or fellowship awarded by a department or college may be used as part of this amount. (2) International students who have not graduated from an accredited college or university in the United States and whose native language is not English, normally must achieve satisfactory scores on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System test (IELTS). Satisfactory TOEFL requirements for Classified admission are: (a) Internet-based test: a total score of 80 with a score of 20 on each Section (graduate assistants who teach courses must score 23 or above on the Speaking Section) on the iBT; or (b) Computer-based test: a total score of 213 with a score of 21 on Section 1 (Listening Comprehension) on the computer test; or (c) Paper-based test: a total score of 550 with a score of 55 on Section l (Listening Comprehension) on the paper test; or (d) a level 112 from the ELS Language Centers. Information about the TOEFL, including test dates and locations in international countries, can be obtained from Educational Testing Service (ETS) at www.ets.org. Satisfactory IELTS performance is a score of 6.5 or better. PHOTOCOPIES OF TOEFL and/or IELTS SCORES WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. (3) International students may not enter the United States for graduate study without a U.S. Immigration (I-20) form. This form will be supplied by the International Admissions Clerk in the Graduate School after a department or college chooses to accept a student and items l and 2 above are met in addition to the admission requirements listed previously. Do you accept international transfer students from other U.S. universities?
Yes. International students transferring from a school within the United States must be “IN STATUS” with Immigration and Naturalization Services to be issued an I-20 form from Idaho State University. A transfer form will be sent after the application has been received, to be completed as verification of acceptable immigration status.
Are there additional requirements for doctoral programs?
Yes. Doctoral program admission has higher standards. Generally, students applying for admission to a doctoral program must hold a master's degree and must have achieved at least the 50th percentile in one of the aptitude sections (V/Q/A) of the GRE. The sliding GPA/Test Score scale is not applicable to doctoral applications.
I have a three-year bachelor's degree. Am I eligible to be accepted into the Graduate School?
Yes. 3-year academic bachelor's degrees are evaluated individually and assessed relative to the Graduate School and department admission requirements.
What if supporting materials are received before my application?
Supporting materials are held by the Graduate School until the application file is complete. Completed application files are forwarded to departments for evaluation.
Can I fax documents to the Graduate School?
Yes. However, fax documents are typically NOT considered official.
Do graduate students need to attend an orientation?
Orientation is a combination of on-line (required) and live/in-person (recommended). Login/on-line registration information is included with admission notification letters.
