The meeting of the Faculty Professional Policies Council was convened at 3:40 p.m. in Room #316 of the Business Administration Building.
Approval of Minutes: Minutes of the March 24, 1999 meeting were approved.
Discussion of Student Evaluations and Peer Review for Faculty Assessment: In an informal discussion of the use of student evaluations as the sole method of teaching assessment of faculty, council members reviewed standard questionnaires from individual departments. It was suggested that outcome measures, peer review and student evaluations be used in combination for promotion and tenure consideration. It was also suggested that statistical analysis of evaluations should reflect a consistent mechanism in all of the colleges. The council again addressed the need for disclosure of method where numerical analysis is involved. The council will consider this issue further during the next academic year.
Discussion of Dating Policy for Faculty and Students: Dave Beard moved to accept the dating policy statement proposed by Linda Hatzenbuehler to be placed in the conflict of interest section of the Faculty/Staff Handbook. The motion was seconded by Cindy Wilson, and was unanimously accepted. "The development of romantic relationships between faculty and students currently enrolled < in the faculty's class(es)> or under the direct supervision of the faculty member is unacceptable and considered counter to proper standards of professional behavior."
New Business: The <recommendation> was made by the council to mention that faculty need periodic notification of updates to the Faculty/Staff Handbook. The question was raised as to whether or not faculty can be held to a version of the Handbook they may not be aware of since the web page version is not yet complete or operational. It was further recommended that each department have the responsibility to keep an updated version of the Handbook.
Election of PPC chair for Academic Year 99-2000: Cindy Wilson was nominated by Sharon Sieber for the AY 99-2000 PPC Chair, seconded by Bobbie Hyde, and unanimously confirmed.
No further meetings were scheduled for Spring 99.
The meeting adjourned at 5:15 p.m.
Respectfully submitted by Sharon Sieber on April 26, 1999.
