Members Present: Beard, Branch, Cutchen, Hatzenbuehler, Montgomery, Sieber (Chair), Wilson
Members absent: Horiuchi, Nunn, Sato, West (resigned)
The meeting of the Faculty Professional Policies Council was convened at 3: 1 0 p.m. in the First Security Room in the Business Administration Building.
Discussion of Professor Emeritus Status: (1) Professor Emeritus status:
Nomination and Privileges. Members of the council felt it was preferable
to rewrite the handbook with regard to the definition for Professor Emeritus:
it should now read Emeritus status.
(2) Tracy Montgomery agreed to draft a paragraph reminding the Faculty Senate of its role in ensuring the integrity of the nomination process. Members of the Council discussed procedure as described in the Faculty/ Staff Handbook and concluded that from what the Handbook says, the Faculty Senate has to accept a letter of nomination.
(3) The Council agreed to research faculty privileges for Emeritus
status (Sharon Sieber) in order to include them in the handbook.
The council also made suggestions for rewriting the catalogues to reflect
emeritus status.
Faculty Leave: A faculty member has asked the Faculty Senate how Faculty
might find out about how faculty leave time counts toward time for sabbatical,
promotion and tenure, before approaching a supervisor. The members of the
Council discussed what our policies are on various kinds of leaves of absence
and how they impact on one's accumulated time in rank with respect to promotion
and tenure and time toward sabbatical leaves and/or disability leave. The
Council agreed to research both faculty leave (David Beard to talk to lawyer)
and report findings back to the PPC.
Policy Matter and due process: The Council deliberated on an
issue regarding due process in a recent decision involving a faculty member,
which seems to set a precedent for faculty policies, and agreed to write
a letter to the University lawyer.
Use of student evaluations for the assessment of faculty: Discussion
of the use of student evaluations for faculty assessment: Linda Hatzenbuehler
to talk to Barbara Lawrence, and will invite her to speak to the Professional
Policies Council. Faye Cutchen to look at practices at other universities.
The meeting was adjourned at 5:15 p.m.
