FPPC Meeting Minutes November 1, 2000

Present: Beard(Chair), Bhushan, Egger, Hatzenbuehler, Hitchcock, Jacobson, Laquer,

Miller, Ronald, Watson

Absent: Campbell, McWhirter, Pumphrey

I. Minutes of October 18, 2000 were approved 6-0-0 with corrections. Will forward to

Faculty Senate for approval.

II. Reports

A. Beard composed a Draft Policy of the Periodic Peer Review. This draft does not

include rewards or remediation. The council will work on that issue after Dr.

Doug Lees' visit.

B. Dean Hatzenbuehler reported on the mini-grant committee meeting and wanted

make sure the FPPC had their questions ready for Dr. Doug Lees' visit on

Monday, November 6 at 2:00 pm. Beard will draw up a list of questions for

Dr. Lees' meeting on Monday.

III. Business

A. The council focused on the draft policy that Beard composed, based on

council’s modifications. There was a general consensus they like the structure of

the policy. The council postponed reaching an agreement on certain word usage

and sentence structure in the policy.

B. There was discussion on the word substantive and if it should be listed in the

policy. The words “development” and “excellence” were discussed and

debated. The council restructured some of the sentences and deleted some

wording. The policy will go back to be worked on with the new changes and to

be reviewed by council at the next meeting.

C. The council briefly discussed rewards and remediation. The decision was made

to leave this issue alone until the council could hear Dr. Lees speak on these

topics.
