I. Minutes of September 5, 2001
Action: The motion to approve the minutes with amendments was moved,
seconded and carried.
A. The council discussed at length a letter Beard received from Dr.
Karen Weiler about interpreting the sabbatical policy in the Faculty/Staff
Handbook; in particular, whether non tenure track faculty were eligible. The
council considered two questions: 1) Should FPPC try to interpret this
policy, and 2) should part or all of it be directed to Faculty Senate or Deans'
Council. Dr. Hatzenbuehler reported that the word "sabbatical" historically
implied tenure track faculty only at ISU. The council agreed that the policy
makes a clear distinction between academic faculty and non-tenure track
faculty. Some council members felt that the sabbatical issue itself (as
opposed to strictly interpreting the current wording in the handbook) should
be visited. It was decided that Dr. Beard would draft a statement
interpreting the current sabbatical policy to be considered as a motion for
inclusion in the FPPC minutes.
