COUNCIL FOR TEACHING AND LEARNING

Minutes

Place:              BA Building, Room 208

Present:          Della Rossa, Devine, Gojayeva, Leung, Neill, Nuhfer, Reis (Chair), Risinger, Smith

Absent:           Adkison, Dean, Packer, and Reynolds (all excused)

           

1.       Introductions – each member introduced themselves.  Solomon Leung will take Chikashi Sato’s appointment due to time conflicts. 

 

2.       Minutes of May 4, 2005

Action: Moved by Smith and seconded by Gojayeva to approve the Minutes of May 4, 2005.  Passed unanimously.

 

3.       Reis handed out a list of helpful web sources.

 

4.       February Workshop

Each February the Center for Teaching & Learning brings a speaker to campus for a two-day workshop.  Reis and Nuhfer have nominated Susan Walcott to address faculty regarding high level thinking.  The College of Business has been using this program and it is working.  Nuhfer would like to choose a book and other references for professors to read in preparation of the workshop.  

Action:  Moved by Nuhfer and seconded by Della Rossa to invite Susan Wolcott as the February Workshop speaker.  Motion passed, 1 abstention. 

 

5.       Summary of responses to the classroom survey

Dean is ill – the topic will be deferred until the next meeting. 

 

6.       Goals for 2005-2006

  1. Liaison/dialogue between the Campus Planning Council and the Council for Teaching & Learning.  Della Rossa volunteered to be the Campus Planning liaison from the council. 
  2. Proposal to initiate classroom repairs/remodel.  Darrell Buffaloe and some instructors in the College of Technology have been contacted regarding students doing the painting and repairs on a classroom for a model classroom. 

 

It was noted that there is no money at this time to furnish the Rendezvous Building. 

 

7.       Nuhfer reported that a Deans’ Council discussion involved service awards.  He thinks this may come to the council.
