1.  It was established that a quorum was present.

Minutes of November 20, 2002 –

Action:  Moved by McKnight and seconded by Reis to approve the minutes of November 20, 2002 with corrections.  Passed unanimously.

2.  Discussion of general assessment template -

Nuhfer made three suggestions to the Council to consider:

¨      Who should do the survey?  Is it better off in the departments as opposed to the Council?

¨      Cost benefit.  Is it worth the time invested for the Council to do the survey?

¨      The Council should clearly articulate the outcome.

A discussion took place about the template as prepared by Adkison.  Nuhfer handed out a reference sheet to assess science courses.  The criteria are set in question form to see if the courses can answer them.  He acknowledged that some goal courses do not have a framework set into place, such as 9 and 10A.  The departments who teach the goal courses should call a meeting to articulate the goals.  The faculty will be provided with a template, instructions on why the assessment is happening, then report back to the Council on their findings and articulations.  Nuhfer suggested after the courses are articulated, the new wording should be placed in the catalog to be conveyed to the students as well as instructors.

Adkison will redraft the assessment in question form.  He stated that the Council should push forward and perhaps develop goals 1, 4 and 5 first.

Nuhfer suggested contacting all the Chairs of the goal courses.  They can create a committee to meet the week after Spring Break.  All of the goals can be done simultaneously with the faculty who teach the goal courses.

3.  Next semester’s faculty development theme -

Nuhfer stated that the faculty development workshops are usually done the third week of February.  The Center is behind schedule getting it started this year.  He suggested that the Council work on workshops a year in advance due to speakers having very busy schedules.  Two suggestions are:

¨      Cooperative Learning – Marie Revak and Barbara Millis of USAFA or Karl Smith, U of MN.

¨      Biology of the brain level when people learn - Bob Leamnson.

Smith stated that her students got a lot out of Leamnson’s book.  Nuhfer will check with him as first choice for the workshop.  The workshop will be all day and consist of a continental breakfast and lunch.

Nuhfer explained that the Center has a faculty development budget for a variety of uses, such as boot camp, workshops, services, surveys and web programming.

4.  The Council will meet during the second week of classes in January 2003.

5.  Adjourned at 12:10

Respectfully submitted,

Connie Patchin, Secretary
