II. BUSINESS
A. Presentation on Information Literacy (Rosmarie Fouad)
Rosmarie Fouad made a presentation to Council members on information literacy.
A handout of her powerpoint presentation is provided.
B. Discussion on
information literacy
Belzer asked for questions and comments concerning the presentation made by
Rosmarie Fouad. Questions were asked about how information literacy could be
incorporated into a students’ existing curiculum. Rosmarie indicated that students
were often confused when they took the general education goal for Speech prior
to English 202 because they had few skills that could help them locate information
needed for their speeches. One suggestion involved requiring students to take
a general education course in information literacy. Another suggestion involved
increasing the hours required for speech and incorporating assignments on information
literacy into the assignments for the speech course. The point was made that such
a change would impact faculty staffing for speech classes. Council members generally
agreed that students should be able to test out of an information literacy requirement
but that it would be necessary to increase the faculty required to teach additional
courses.
One Council member asked whether information literacy courses were more appropriate
at the high school level. It was generally agreed that it would be best to have students
enter college with information literacy skills but that most students did not have these skills.
High school debaters were probably best prepared. Rosmarie indicated that accreditation
agencies are supporting information literacy requirements at the college level; some
movement has occurred toward information literacy programs at the high school level but
not nearly to the extent that has occurred at the college level.
Jan House indicated that the Center for Teaching and Learning could sponsor a discussion
group to explore issues related to information literacy. It was suggested that faculty be
surveyed to determine their interest in the information literacy issue. McNight suggested
using some of the questions formulated within Rosmarie Fouad’s powerpoint presentation.
Belzer agreed to send out an e-mail to all Council members drafting questions that could
be put forward to the faculty. It was agreed that Council members would comment on the
drafted e-mail and then ask for responses from the faculty.
C. Summary of Business
for the next Council Meeting
Faculty serving on the committees to review goals 6 and 10a have confirmed that these
goals were reviewed and have some documentation. Final reports may be forthcoming.
It was suggested that other goals be reviewed. Kruger indicated a need to revisit the
math goal. Further discussion on which goals will be reviewed this year will occur a the
next meeting.
Dean and Kunicki have distributed a questionnaire to Assessment Coordinators. They
have received some preliminary feedback. A more complete reporting on their findings
will be discussed at the next Council meeting.
