Part 1. History and Status

Section III. Role and Mission

The institutions of higher education in Idaho, recognizing that it is unlikely that sufficient resources will be available to achieve excellence in all their academic offerings and that there are programs at each institution which have been developed as areas of major academic emphasis and which have or may become statewide in nature, have consciously displayed their emphases of these programs through the selective allocation of funds, the attraction of qualified faculty, the attainment of recognition such as specialized program accreditation, and the production of qualified graduates. These special academic emphases are encouraged by the State Board of Education to flourish until there is conclusive evidence that any program should be altered.

As an integral part of its academic role and mission, each institution has designated in a role and mission statement its areas of primary emphasis. These programs constitute the highest priorities for funding support and maintenance of academic excellence. In its meeting of October 28, 1983, the State Board of Education approved the current role and mission statement for Idaho State University.
