Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy for 2007/2008

Forms for 2007/2008

POLICY

This policy has been revised and will be effective beginning with the 2007-2008 academic year.

To be eligible for federal/state financial aid at
Idaho State University:

You must meet the requirements as outlined in this Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy. If you do not meet these requirements, you will be denied future financial aid. This denial of financial aid should not be confused with any probation or dismissal action taken by the Office of Registration and Records.

Satisfactory academic progress general requirements:

Required grade point average:

If you do not maintain the required GPA, you will be denied financial aid. Transfer credits and credits taken at ISU are considered when determining credits attempted.

An academic student transferring to ISU from another institution must maintain a 2.00 GPA the first semester at ISU if they were admitted to ISU on academic probation.

Required Credits:

You must complete at least 67% of all credits attempted. Credits taken at ISU, as well as credits taken at other institutions will be considered. Credits attempted are defined as all credits posted to your transcript for which you receive a passing grade or an F, I, W, NR, U, NP OR IP. Credits completed are defined as all classes for which you received a passing grade of A, B, C, D, S, OR P. Audit/challenge credits do not count as credits attempted or completed. Repeated courses count as credits attempted during each term you are enrolled in a course but will be counted once as credits completed the first time a passing grade is received for the course. Failing a repeated class that you previously passed results in 0 credits completed. You must report any grade changes to the Office of Financial aid that are made after the end of a semester (including completion of I, IP or NR grades) in order for them to be considered.

Maximum Credits Attempted:

Your financial aid eligibility will be limited to a maximum number of credit hours that you have attempted at ISU and any other institution you have attended. The limit on credit hours is based on your stated degree or certificate objective. The maximum attempted credits allowed for degree or certificate completion will be no more than 150% of the credits needed to complete that type of degree. When the maximum number of credit hours is reached, you will be denied financial aid. Refer to the following charts for specific credit maximums.

Review of Satisfactory Academic Progress:

The Office of Financial Aid will review your progress at the time you apply and at the conclusion of spring semester. There are four exceptions: (1) If you are on financial aid contract, you will be evaluated at the end of the contract period; (2) If you withdraw (medical or otherwise) from ISU you will be denied as of the date of withdrawal; (3) If you receive all "F, I, NR or U" grades for an enrollment period; and (4) Credits attempted will be evaluated at the conclusion of every enrollment period.

Denial of Financial Aid :

You will be denied financial aid if you do not meet the standards as outlined. You will be notified of your denial in writing.

Renewal of financial aid if you are denied:

1. You may attend ISU without financial aid and make up deficiencies in credit hours completed and/or required GPA. If you choose this option, after you have made up the deficiencies you must submit the form "Request for Review of Satisfactory Progress". (Choose form by appropriate year.) It should not be submitted until after you have made up your credits and/or raised your GPA to the required level. This option is not available if you were denied because you had reached the maximum number of credits attempted or did not meet the terms of your financial aid contract.

2. If you are denied for not meeting the terms of your financial aid contract you may make up your deficiency by completing twelve (12) credits toward your degree requirements. You must receive a "C" or better in each class. If you choose this option, after you have completed the required credits, you must submit a form "Request for Reinstatement". (Choose form by appropriate year.) This option is not available if you are denied because you have reached the maximum number of credits attempted

3. For a first, second, or third appeal, you may file a written appeal for an exemption from this policy. The appeal forms will be mailed to you with your denial notification or may be obtained from the Office of Financial Aid or on the web at http://www.isu.edu/finaid/sat_pro08.shtml.

4. If this is your fourth or greater appeal, you must complete Option 1 or Option 2 above (whichever applies). Information will be mailed to you with your denial notification or may be obtained from the Office of Financial Aid or on the web at http://www.isu.edu/finaid/sat_pro08.shtml.

Appeal Deadline:

You must submit your completed appeal by the end of the tenth week of class to be considered for any semester. Appeals for summer session must be submitted by the midpoint of your summer enrollment period.

If your appeal is approved:

You will be placed on a financial aid contract and your aid will be reinstated. The contract specifies the conditions you must meet in order to continue receiving financial aid.

If your appeal is denied:

You will be advised of your options to regain your eligibility in the future or you may follow Option 1 or 2 above (whichever applies).
