Types of Federal and State Financial Aid
There are three categories of federal student aid: grants, loans, and work-study. Grants provide financial aid which does not have to be repaid. Loans provide borrowed money that must be repaid with interest. Work-study allows student to earn money to help pay for educational expenses while enrolled in school.
- Grants do not require repayment and are awarded based on need. They are generally provided by the Federal government or individual states.
- Loans - Student loans are a form of aid that needs to be repaid. There are many types of student loans, which may or may not be need-based. The Financial Aid Office will determine your eligibility.

- Work Study programs provide students with employment opportunities both on and off campus. Participation in this program is typically based on financial need. Jobs are listed on Bengal Jobs through the Career Center.
- ISU Career Center - a comprehensive office serving both the career development and employment needs of students.
- Scholarships are a type of student aid which you do not need to repay. Scholarships are generally reserved for students with special qualifications from a wide variety of sources.
