Sustainability at Idaho State University

What is Sustainability?

What exactly does sustainability mean?

Sustainability is "the quality of not being harmful to the environment or depleting natural resources, and thereby supporting long-term ecological balance." - from dictionary.com

In other words, sustainability is the development of a society that meets its current demands while preserving the earth’s limited amount of natural resources in order for future generations to thrive.  Reducing waste and energy consumption while investing in renewable resources are all integral parts of creating a sustainable society.
