NEW PH.D. PROGRAM BEGINS FALL 2009
Beginning in August 2009, the ISU Department of English will offer a new and innovative Ph.D. in English and the Teaching of English. The program, which integrates the study of literature and English pedagogy, trains students for teaching careers in English at two- and four-year colleges and universities. It was unanimously approved by the Idaho State Board of Education in August 2008.
The ISU English Department has long offered training for college and university teachers in English writing, language, and literature. The Ph.D. is a conversion from the current doctoral program, the Doctor of Arts (D.A.), an interdisciplinary degree in English studies and pedagogy, which has been offered at ISU since 1971. The department also has an established M.A. program and recently added a Graduate Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), which may be completed as part of a graduate degree or as a stand-alone credential.
The Ph.D. builds on the strengths of the D.A., which attracted applicants from around the world and placed over 90% of graduates in tenure-track teaching positions. With the new Ph.D., the department will continue to draw national and international students and provide doctoral training for teaching-oriented careers at two- and four-year schools.
Applicants to the Ph.D. program must have an M.A. in English as well as a 3.5 GPA and at least a 50% on the verbal section of the GRE. Applications are due by February 15 and must include an application form, undergraduate and graduate transcripts, three letters of recommendation, a writing sample of 10-20 pages, and a 500-word statement of purpose. Priority in admission will be given to experienced, successful teachers.
