What Are the Application Requirements?
To be considered for the M.A. program, applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, a minimum GPA of 3.0 (or equivalent), at least 50% on the verbal section of the GRE, and a completed application, including undergraduate (and any graduate) transcripts, GRE scores, three letters of recommendation, and a 500-word statement of purpose. Applicants for TAships should also submit the TA/Fellowship Application Form and a 10-20 page writing sample (see “Where Do I Send Application Materials” below).
To be considered for the Ph.D. program, applicants must have an M.A. in English (or closely related field), a 3.5 GPA (or equivalent), at least a 50% on the verbal section of the GRE, and a completed application, including undergraduate and graduate transcripts, GRE scores, three letters of recommendation, a 500-word statement of purpose, and a 10-20 page writing sample. Applicants for TAships and Fellowships should also submit the TA/Fellowship Application Form (see “Where Do I Send Application Materials” below).
To be considered for the TESOL Certificate Program, applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, a GPA of 3.0 over the last two years of undergraduate coursework, at least a 35% on the verbal section of the GRE, and a completed application, including undergraduate (and any graduate) transcripts, three letters of recommendation, and GRE scores. Applicants whose first language is not English need to have a score of 21 on the listening section of the computer-based TOEFL test, with a composite score of 550/213, or a score of 84 on the MTELP, or a score of 6 on the IELTS. Students applying to or enrolled in the English M.A. or Ph.D. program also need to submit a separate application to the TESOL Certificate Program.
These materials are evaluated by the Graduate Committee or TESOL Committee to determine admission to the program.
Where Do I Send Application Materials?
Applicants to the M.A., Ph.D., and TESOL Certificate Programs need to submit application materials to two places: (1) the Graduate School and (2) the English Department.
(1) Application Materials for the Graduate School
All M.A., Ph.D., and TESOL applicants submit the following materials directly the Graduate School:
- Graduate School Application Form
- Graduate School Application Fee
- Transcripts of undergraduate and any graduate coursework
- GRE Scores
- TOEFL, MTELP, or IELTS scores (for applicants whose first language is not English)

(2) Application Materials for the English Department
Depending on the program, applicants should submit the following to the English Department:
- Three letters of recommendation (all M.A., Ph.D., TESOL applicants)
- A 500-word statement of purpose (all M.A. and Ph.D. applicants)
- TA/Fellowship Application Form (any M.A. and Ph.D. applicants for TAships or fellowships)
- A 10-20 page writing sample (any M.A. applicants for TAships and all Ph.D. applicants)
- A page with your full contact information: address(es), phone number(s), and e-mail(s)

In addition, all U.S. citizens who want to be eligible for other forms of aid should submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which is filed on-line with the U.S. Government.

Note: Applications submitted after April 30 will be reviewed in October for spring admission and enrollment.
