  Tracks in the Major

Students may choose from among three tracks for a degree of Bachelor of Arts in English:

All tracks enable the student to learn the nature of language, to explore human experience, and to develop writing skills.   A degree within one of these tracks will prepare the student for a variety of careers that will depend on strong observational, fact-finding, analytical, and communication skills.

Literary Track
Focuses on language studies, on a survey of British and American literature, on genre studies, on specific historical literature, on major literary figures, and on advanced studies in linguistics and language.  Elective coursework could include courses in professional writing and creative writing, or courses such as folklore, film, and comparative literature.  A student with this degree could be looking for a career in education.

Professional Writing
Concentrates on technical and business writing, on creative writing, on media and writing opportunities, on a survey of British and American literature, and on genre studies.  A minor in a discipline relevant to the student’s interests is encouraged.  A student with this degree could be looking for a career in technical writing.

Creative Writing
Centers around a writing workshop model, one that includes coursework in creative writing courses, in creative writing projects, in specific professional writing contexts, in language studies, in humanities contexts, in surveys of British and American literature, and in genre studies.  A relevant minor in a discipline suited to the student’s interests is encouraged.  A student with this degree could be looking for a career that involves writing creatively.
