Enrollment

Soon after the class begins you will receive a printed copy of your class enrollment. The online version of your class list is available in the Faculty & Staff Tools on the Idaho State University Internet site. The online enrollment forms allow you to print out an up-to-date class list. You may find this helpful since enrollments can change as students drop and add classes.

To access the online enrollment information in the Faculty & Staff Tools you will need to enter the index number for your class. The index number for classes is available in the printed or online class schedule for classes.

The class schedule indicates where the class meets, the current enrollment and number of seats still available, when the class meets and whether or not the class is closes. Before you add students to a closed class you should contact your department chair to discuss policies and procedures for adding students.

Class Requirements

Memo

To: COB faculty
From: Ken Smith, Associate Dean
Date: May 20, 2003

Re: Checklists for student advising and course prerequisites

Checklist forms for prerequisite certification and to ask students about their official program of study status are on the mail room table. Please circulate these forms in your classes during the first week of classes.
You should insert the course number and prerequisites for your course on the prerequisite form. (You might have to look at the electronic catalog to see what official prerequisites are. Students who have not met the required prerequisites should visit with you and get your permission to remain in the class. If you grant that permission, please document your reasons and sign the form. Extra prerequisite forms are available on the table in the mailroom.

Prerequisites for major classes are enforced by the instructor. There is no need to give me a copy of your form, but you should document reasons for each exception that you make and keep it in your class file. Prerequisites for core courses are enforced by the instructor and the associate dean (me). Students majoring in business will need to petition for a prerequisite exception. If you are teaching a core course, you should keep a copy of the form for your files and put a copy in my mailbox.

In addition, please pass the program of study form around in your 300 or 400 level courses asking the students to confirm their understanding of our advising system. The purpose of this form is to provide us with exceptions who appear not to know their advisors so that we can follow up. Before you pass the form around, take a few minutes to explain the system to the students (read the paragraph on the top of the form) and to emphasize its importance. Take several blank forms to class and return the completed program of study forms to me as soon as possible. Ask students to complete this form even if they have already done so in another class. It only takes a minute and we want complete records.

Thank you.

Grading Online

Faculty submit grades via Web Grade Input in Faculty and Staff Tools. Midterm grades provide students with feedback about their performance and faculty report only grades of "D" and "F" at midterm. Midterm grades are typically due at the end of the first eight weeks of class and the due date is listed on the official ISU calendar each semester. Midterm grades provide important information to students. As you prepare the calendar of exams and activities for your class you may want to make sure you schedule some graded work prior to midterm so can adequately evaluate students' performance at midterm.

Faculty also enter their final grades for the class via the Internet in the Faculty and Staff Tools. Final grades are typically due no later than the Monday immediately after finals week. Faculty usually receive an email or note in their campus mailbox in the department informing them about the deadline.

Incompletes

Students occasionally request an incomplete or grade of "I" in a class. Faculty should follow the guidelines for their College and department for issuing a grade of "I." Faculty and students are required to fill out a contract indicating the conditions required to finish the incomplete. A copy of the contract is available for faculty to download.

Support Staff is providing a copy of this file at a later date.

Textbooks and Ancillary Materials

Faculty should contact their department chair to determine the departmental policy on textbook adoptions. Classes with multiple sections usually use the same textbook. Decisions about which textbooks to adopt are usually made by those teaching the class throughout the year. If you are the only teacher for a particular class you should consult with the department chair to find out what textbooks were used in the past. Ancillary materials including an instructor's manual, technology supplements and test banks are provided are also available to faculty teaching a class.
