Getting Started After Arrival
Getting Started Importance of Teaching and Learning Teaching and learning play a significant role in the mission and objectives of the College of Business. The mission statement, our strategic initiatives and our advising process emphasize the importance of preparing students for the challenges of the future. Getting Started Undergraduate Advising Process Faculty play an important role by helping students plan their degree program and prepare for a career in business. Students have access to information on the Internet and in printed materials that map out required classes and prerequisites for various classes and majors in the College of Business. In addition the College of Business advising process is designed to bring students together with faculty to develop their plan for completing coursework. It is important to encourage students to participate in the advising process so they can make timely progress on their degree. The Assistant Dean of the College of Business, Mr. Darrell Scott, advises all students who want to earn a business degree but still have not officially declared a major. Mr. Scott's office is located in the College of Business building in Room 510. If you have a student who has not met with Mr. Scott, they are encouraged to call his office at 208-282-3448 or email him at scotdarr@isu.edu to make an advising appointment . If you have students who only attend classes at the Idaho Falls campus let them know that they must also contact Mr. Scott and begin the advising process. Mr. Scott schedules regular visits to the Idaho Falls campus and can meet there with students to provide advice. Students who officially declare a major are assigned a faculty advisor in their department. After students declare a major they should make an appointment to visit with their advisor and find out the procedure they need to follow to fill out a Program of Study. The Program of Study is a roadmap of the courses the students will need to take to graduate. It incorporates information on prerequisites and the sequence in which classes are offered in their major. Students need to understand that a program of study must be on file for them before they can take any 400-level classes. Students without a program of study are blocked from taking classes until they fill one out and file it. Students who decide to make changes to their program of study should check with their advisor to determine if the changes will delay their graduation. Changes could include dropping a class, taking a class in a semester different from the sequence on the program of study or substituting classes. Getting Started Resources For Students The Idaho State Internet site and the College of Business Internet site provide faculty and students. Students and faculty are encouraged to explore the resources available on the Internet sites. Getting Started Academic Catalogs Online Overview The undergraduate catalogs are available online. Faculty should review the required prerequisites for the classes they teach. Faculty should include any prerequisites for their class on the syllabus. In addition every student in each class in the College of Business is required to sign a form the first day of class indicating whether or not they have the required prerequisites. Prerequisites are strictly enforced in the College of Business. If students are unsure whether or not they have the required prerequisites they should contact Mr. Darrell Scott's office. Prerequisite classes should be completed before taking the class in which they are required. New faculty should consult with their department chair if they have questions about prerequisites and policies. Getting Started Evaluating Teaching Faculty are encouraged to use both formal and informal feedback to gain insight into how students perceive their classroom experiences. All faculty in the College of Business are required to administer a formal course evaluation to students the last two weeks of the semester. In addition to the end of semester evaluations, faculty typically evaluate their teaching and student performance throughout the semester. There are several sources of information on feedback and evaluation available
on the Internet. You may want to ask your mentor for additional ideas
and information about feedback and evaluation. Getting Started Informal Self Evaluation The College of Business has resources available in the main office, BA 202, including "Tools for Teaching" and "The Teaching Professor." The link contains lists the contents of "Tools for Teaching" including a chapter on fast feedback. Getting Started Getting Feedback from Students at Midterm New faculty may find it helpful to ask students to evaluate the class and teaching on an informal basis at midterm. Faculty can ask for informal feedback or may want to develop questions to cover specific areas. The link provides on example of an instrument used to solicit feedback at midterms. http://www.wmich.edu/grad/gatraining/TAmodelfor.htm Getting Started Evaluating Teaching (It is important to include basic information on your syllabus about the Idaho State University calendar. Although your syllabus should include detail on class assignments, exam and due dates, you should also include any University holidays and the time for the regularly scheduled final exam. You may also want to note that midterm grades are due from faculty at the end of the first eight weeks of class as listed on the ISU calendar. Faculty need to submit grades for students who have earned a "D" or and "F" by midterm. You should plan to have an exam score or other grades completed before midterm so you can provide feedback at midterm to students. The dates are also available on the interactive calendar. Getting Started Purpose and Use Each year College of Business faculty including adjunct and part time faculty are required to write a Personal Activity Report or PAR. Faculty respond to student evaluations of their teaching and indicate how classroom activities support the College's strategic initiative. Adjunct faculty are only required to respond to the first section of the PAR form which discusses teaching. The information from the PAR is used by department chairs to write their
annual evaluation of faculty. Department chairs write their assessment
of faculty members which is then discussed in the Executive Committee
of the College of Business. The Executive Committee consists of the Dean,
Assistant and Associate Deans, the MBA Director and Department Chairs.
After the Executive Committee completes its process late in the spring
semester you can pick up a copy of your evaluation and schedule an appointment
with the Dean of the College to discuss its contents. Adjunct faculty
are encouraged to schedule and appointment and discuss their evaluation
with their department chair. Getting Started Final Exams and Dead Week Idaho State University has policies pertaining to deadweek and finals week. Although faculty can introduce material in the week before finals week begins there are restrictions on when finals can be administered. http://www.isu.edu/departments/areg/fexam.shtml#fexcl Getting Started College of Business Organization Structure This link provides information on the College of Business administrative structure along with information of the individuals currently serving the College as administrators or department chairs. |
