Early College Program Department of English and Philosophy, ISU

DEPARTMENTAL POLICY on Concurrent Enrollment Adjuncts

Approved May 2002

SBOE policy states that high school teachers who hold the English MA are eligible for consideration by Idaho colleges and universities for adjunct status. As adjuncts, these teachers would offer concurrent enrollment courses at their high schools.

High school teachers with the MA in English will be allowed to teach courses at their high schools as adjuncts in the Department of English and Philosophy under these conditions.

  1. Adjunct status is awarded on an annual basis.
  2. The adjunct will follow all the rules about syllabi, grades, text selection, and so on, that are followed by adjuncts on campus. The department chair or the director of composition must approve syllabi and texts for adjunct-taught sections during the semester before the course will be offered.
  3. A compensated representative of the department will discuss the course requirements with the adjunct. He or she will also visit that adjunct twice during the semester to observe class and go over grades and writing assignments and to examine at least one set of graded papers. The departmental representative will write up an evaluative report to the chair of the department. The decision for re-appointment will be based on this report.
  4. The adjunct faculty member will make use of our departmental evaluation forms at the end of the semester. These will also be considered in the decision for re-appointment.

SBOE policy also states that high school teachers currently in the process of earning an English MA are eligible for consideration by Idaho colleges and universities for adjunct status. As adjuncts, these teachers would offer freshman-level concurrent enrollment courses at their high schools.

In addition to the four points listed above, an adjunct who is enrolled in our MA program will also be bound by the following conditions:

  1. Adjunct status will be granted only so long as the student is making good progress toward the MA. The student must be enrolled in at least one of our graduate courses during any semester in which adjunct status is granted.
  2. Permission to teach ENGL 101 will not be granted until after the MA candidate has completed ENGL 631, Seminar in Teaching Writing.
  3. Permission to teach ENGL 102 will not be granted until after the candidate has completed ENGL 631, 611, 613, and two other courses within the MA program.
  4. Permission to teach ENGL 110 will not be granted until after the candidate has completed all course work for the MA.
  5. Apart from visits to the high school made by the supervisor appointed by the department, the adjunct will make three visits to the department during the semester to discuss the progress of the course he or she is teaching. These discussions will be held with the Director of Composition or the Department Chair, depending on what course is being taught.

If a high school teacher applying for adjunct status is pursuing the MA at another university, we will evaluate where he or she stands within that program. We will require the applicant to complete courses similar to those we have listed above before adjunct status is given.
