Econ 3331 - Money and Banking

Course Objectives and Assessment

This course satisfies 3 of the upper-division elective credits required for an economics major or minor. It emphasizes student learning based upon the following course goals and outcomes.

Objective 1: To learn and understand basic economic concepts related to money and banking.

Outcome:

  1. Students will be able to show that they understand and have knowledge of economic concepts such as financial instruments, money, interest rates, financial institutions, and monetary policy.

Assessment:

  1. Successful completion of homework problems, exams, student papers, and a student journal of current events relating to this course.

Objective 2: To use economic theory to analyze topics related to money and banking.

Outcome:

  1. Students will be able to show that they can use economic theory to analyze how interest rates are determined, how money is created, financial institutional behavior, and past monetary policy.

Assessment:

  1. Successful completion of homework problems, exams, and student papers.

Objective 3: To use economic theory to be able to predict how changes in the economy will lead to economic changes related to money and banking.

Outcome:

  1. Students will be able to show that they can use economic theory to analyze how changes in the economy will lead to changes in interest rates and financial institution behavior, and how changes in monetary policy will affect employment, inflation, and economic growth.

Assessment:

  1. Successful completion of homework problems, exams, and student papers.

Objective 4: To locate and analyze economic data related to money and banking.

Outcome:

  1. Students will be able to locate and analyze data from sources such as the Federal Reserve Bank, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, and the National Credit Union Administration.

Assessment:

  1. Successful completion of homework problems, exams, and student papers.
