Course Objectives and Assessment

Objective 1: Understand the economic issues that affect medical care delivery and finance.

Outcome:

  1. Students will understand and apply the basic economic model of supply and demand to medical markets.
  2. Students will understand and recognize the market and government failures which exist in medical care markets.
  3. Students will apply the techniques of economic evaluation to simple resource allocation decisions.

Assessment:

  1. Passing grade on chapter assignments, midterm exam, and research paper.

Objective 2: Identify and analyze the demand side factors impacting the health care market.

Outcome:

  1. Students will understand the main factors determining the demand for medical care.
  2. Students will understand the information problems that lead to market failure in the health insurance markets.
  3. Students will understand the evaluate the efficiency of various health care delivery systems.

Objective 3: Identify and analyze the supply side factors impacting the health care market.

Outcome:

  1. Students will identify the major supply-side issues in medical care delivery.
  2. Students will understand how the structure of the physicians, hospital services, and pharmaceutical industries impact their performance in the health care sector.
  3. Students will understand the impact society has on the provision and effectiveness of the health care sector.

Objective 4: Identify and analyze health policy and its economic implications.

Outcome:

  1. Students will understand the role of the government in improving access to health care.
  2. Students will understand the economic impact of policies designed to contain costs.
  3. Students will critically evaluate the effectiveness of medical care systems around the world.
  4. Students will critically evaluate the effectiveness of proposed health care reforms.
